If you want to know everything that is running and what is using the CPU, go here and get the Win95 Kernel Toys. That is an self extracting file, just let it extract into a folder of your choosing. Go to that folder, right click on the Wintop.Inf and select Install, it will then install into the Windows folder. While it may be a 95 thing, it will work perfectly well with 98SE, it does with mine.
Here is a screenshot of what it does. You will see that the list is extensive. You can stop a program by right clicking on it, select Properties, then click on Priority, then click on Terminate Process Now. The Terminate option will not appear on any process that has the gear icon.
Note: the install instructions on that screenshot page is wrong, mine are correct.
Forget about the rest of the toys, they are already in 98 in one form or fashion, except for Wintop.

    Wintop.........

It shows that "idle" is 98% of my cpu %..??.....with 8 threads.....only one active.......

Nothing else is using anything to mention........just nominal amounts.....

What's going on here, do you reckon?......Ol' (puzzled) Ben

'Idle' is the processor doing nothing.

Or to put it another way, the Idle - 98% is the portion of the processer resources that are, at that moment, doing nothing and available for other processes to use.

BTW markp62, that Wintop program is cool, didn't know about that, thanks for the info.:D

Hi Ben, if you add all the %'s from the threads to the idle % you should equal 100% or very close to it as the %'s in the threads change slightly all the time.

You're welcome. JohnB, You might like the 95 power toys, these will work well with 98.
The Command Prompt Here [Doshere.Inf] and Explore From Here [Explore.Inf] added to the Context Menu on any folder can be nice. Simple registry entries.
The Flexicd [Flexcd.Inf] will play audio CD's from the Systray, using less than 1% CPU. It will put itself in the Start folder on install, but is not necessary for it to be there. It will autostart as the default audio CD player.
The rest in that download are outdated and like the Kernel Toys, most are already in 98SE.
