I formatted my HD and re installed Win XP but there is no possible way I can get my computer to recognize my USB ports. Plus the fact that when I install my printer and scanner, neither show up in my system devices. The system devise states the USB ports are enabled and no problems. I downloaded the drivers from HP site for Win XP but they still won't work.

A thought - does your motherboard have a VIA chipset - if so you will need to re-install the Via 4 in 1 drivers. Although Win XP included some VIA drivers you should have the latest VIA one's. They can be downloaded from :

If you have the motherboard CD the drivers (older versions) should be on it. Same applies if you have a different chip set - check out the m/b CD if you haven't already done so.

Another solution which I use regularly for recalcitrant hardware is to remove it through Device Manager and reboot and let Windows find and install it again - sometimes works.

Here's a longshot, but it helped me out of my USB problem awhile back... open up Device Manager, expand the list. Starting with the USB Root Hub(s), right click, select properties, select the Power Management tab and make sure the "Allow computer to turn this device off to save power" is NOT selected. I stumbled across this while having a similar problem and this corrected it.

    Hi

I checked my System hardware device and my VIA Bus Master IDE Controller is working fine which I assume should mean the driver is installed. I tried the power managment thing and still nothing happens. What I can't understand is why my printer and scanner don't show in the hardware device if they are installed, and why they won't work. I have reinstalled both but nothing seems to work.

I am running Windows XP with an Athlon750 and 256 mg RAM

Is USB enabled in the BIOS ? If so then try another USB device if you have one - like a mouse.

If your Printer and Scanner are not shown in Device Manager then they are not installed - the drivers may be installed, but XP has not recognised the hardware.

It looks rather as if a repair of XP is imminent.
