Hello!! I formatted my c drive, ran Fdisk, then I ran setup from the d: drive, it goes through all the rigamarole and I get the first win98 screen with the happy message along the lines of ".... initial windows startup.... ".... and then, the screen goes black with the message; "windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. "

It does the same thing in safe mode, too. Heeeelllllpp! Has anyone seen this one before?

The install seems to be tripping over itself.
Try booting from a floppy or to DOS mode and type
    D:/Win98SE/setup.exe

(Type the correct path to your setup.exe !!)

    regards

    win98 protection error continued

Merlin, Thanks for your help. The machine would only take
D:>win98\setup.exe Still, it goes through the setup routine, License agreement, product key, etc., etc. It gives the windows opening screen with the message "Getting ready to run Windows the first time ". The screen goes black with the "windows protection error. You need to restart your computer" message displayed.

This happens no matter what mode. What could be the problem ?

    You have some hardware confilct!

Unhook all cables, printer, modem, broadband especially USB!

If this don't work then remove the sound card and modem and any other hardware not nessesary to boot and operate.

They can be put back after you are up and running!

This a prime example of why it is better to first do everything to fix a system before reinstall.

Why did you decide to do this. Was there a problem with a device?

thanks for the tip about tearing everything out, but I've already done that. The wierd thing about this machine is that the mother board doesn't have a connection plug for the moniter, but that a separate card which plugs into the motherboard has the outlet. Never saw this before....
If you feel like helping me but need more information, I'll find as much info on the particular hardware as possible.
Meanwhile the singing siren of Red Hat beckons...

    Try this!

Enter Bios/cmos find the seting that says Default settings" apply and save and reboot. Again enter Bios this time find the setting that says "Plug and Play OS installed" set to yes and then select reset configuration save exit reboot

    then

F8 to boot menu chose "command prompt only "

    then

    type
    del c:\autoexec.bat

    then

    del c:\config.sys

    then

Type these commands exactly hit enter at the end (do not type the notes that are in parenthesis like this).

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)

    del c:\windows\*.swp

    deltree c:\windows\shelli*.*

deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* (answer yes to all) "ALL "

    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*

    deltree c:\windows\history\*.*

    deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

    Finally

    type
    scandisk /fix

Hit CTRL ALT DEL to reboot the computer

    Mike,

I did your stuff, and it gave me some kind of hardware error message that disappeared before I could write it down, something about "V3 "... or "V... ".

I'm going to start from scratch again, maybe I'll get a better take on the newest error message.

God, what a pain. Thanks for your help, this is a bad dog.
