    Hi there,

Well I've been running ok for almost 2 weeks now with no problems on the graphics card or the internet.

Re the PCI to Universal serial bus driver if you can give any help on this I'd be grateful. All my usb devices are working fine.

Still can't find the video controller in device manager though.

Once again thanks for your help in getting everything running again.

re: USB - lets take this in two steps. First thing you want to do is install the Microsoft fix for 98se USB with via chipsets. Appearantly there is a timing issue that effects those of us running Athlons with Via and 98se. Here is the MSKB article 240075 and download 240075up.exe

    http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...port/kb/articles/Q240/0/75.asp&NoWebContent=1

Note: there are also several other links on this KB page re: USB problems with 98se that you should also read.

Thats step one, step two is a via USB filter driver USBF110. We'll go to that only if you are still experiencing a problem after the MS patch.

    ;)

    Hi Rockster2U,

Sorry I didn't post back earlier, but have been busy. Thanks for your reply, I have got the patch, but haven't installed it yet as
all my usb hardware works fine. I have a digital camera card reader, a web-cam,a graphics tablet and a digital sound system all plugged in using usb 1 and working with no problems, and I don't want to muck this up. I don't have anything plugged into usb2.

Its only the PCI to Universal serial bus thats has a yellow exclamation mark in control panel, unknown devices. I can never find the drivers for this. I have tried the windows cd, and the msi cd for the drivers but windows never finds them. Is this anything to do with usb2? and should I still run the patch?

I checked out the soundcard problem, the sound blaster Audio PCI legacy device, I disabled, as whenever I enable it, I get a message saying that there are no spare IRQ's available and not knowing how to correct this, and as I don't need sound in dos I thought the best thing to do is to disable it.

In the computer I have a soundblaster 64 pci card, along with the microsoft digital sound system(usb), both in use. There is also an onboard soundcard, which I have disabled in the bios. The soundblaster card is the card I used with my old P11 350 and when I upgraded the PC I carried on using the card. Would it be better for me to use the onboard sound card instead of this?

Hope this gives you a clearer picture of the problems, thanks again for your help.

Taxing question but I wouldn't advise pulling the SB card ether. Its been a while since I have done anything with AWE 64 cards (assume this is your SB card) but I don't recall where they had a LPT sharing feature on the DOS emulation (legacy) settings. The ultimate solution on this has to do with the order in which you originally installed cards and what PCI slot each went into, but its too late for that and now is not the time go back and start over trying to resolve an IRQ problem. I'd just leave it disabled.

There may also be an option using your original AWE 64 software disc to uninstall the DOS drivers, but again - its been a few years since I've used these sound cards. Maybe someone else can help you out here.

The patch I sent you earlier has to do with a MS fix specifically for 98se and it is not USB 2.0 specific - was originally released with USB 1.1 - There is also a Via USB filter patch for 98se that is now available in V1.10 (original release was 1.08). As said before, you can try the MS patch first and it shouldn't (famous last words) muck anything up.

I guess the big question is - if it ain't broke, do you still want to try and fix it? Your call ..........

    ;)

    Hi Rockster2U,

Thanks for your reply, I have decided to leave things as they are for the moment, maybe when I have a bit more time, I'll try the patch, but as all my usb devices are working fine, and I don't need sound in dos I think its best to leave things alone.

Once again, thanks to everyone for their help, it solved the graphics card problem.

Just one more thing, how do I mark the post closed?
