    Hi,

    Hello Roy66

Have been fighting with this same problem for several days. Registered with this forum hoping to find an answer. Hadn't yet, but got lucky and now can record voice with Sound Recorder. Maybe this will help in your situation

Altho I had tried to use the following Test Hardware several times before I wrote for assistance, it would not run-stubborn paid off.

In Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices-the Voice tab
Then clik Test Hardware and run the test. During the test, the mic worked, voice recorded and the speakers played it back.

Left the Test, went to Programs and Sound Recorder and it worked. I'll be dad-gummed-seems the test acted as an "installer" of sorts.

Have no answer for the reason this Test would not run for several attempts or why it caused the recorder to work, but somehing about "don't look a gift horse in the mouth "

Hope this works for you and others having the same problem

    Have a great day

Are you choosing the right source from which to record? Double click the speaker icon in the system tray, click properties and choose recording. Then make sure that the microphone is selected as the recording source.

Perhaps when you ran the tests it set the recording source to the mic and it got left there. Did you ever check to see if the mic was selected in the recording properties?

had checked and the mic was selected. Not sure why the Test caused the "fix" but leaving well enought alone.

    Thanks for the reply

Thankyou Tom and Zander for your interest and assistance with my problem.

Tom, unfortunately for me I have not had the same good fortune with the methods you have chosen however between the contributions from each of you we just might be heading in the right direction as following your guidance Zander I have discovered that for some unknown reason in the "properties" the button keeps reverting back to "playback "rather than remaining on record.

    Sure looks suspicious to me.

Perhaps there is a hiccup in the system somewhere????

Also I must mention that I have not been able to find the Sound/Record sorta like tape recorder thing....though it definitely was there before and during this problem as it used to pop up when I went to record but wouldn't record anyway.

Dunno what happened to it maybe I just dumped it but it's not in the recycle bin and I'm not sure how to load it back with the OEM disc.

I don't think that it is relevant to the problem anyway.

If you mean it reverts back to playback after you close the window that's normal. If you open the volume control applet and go back into the recording properties it should still have the mic selected. If it is you're ok there. How about the volume control of the mic (in the recording properties) ? If you ever want to record from a different source such as your cdrom, you have to go back into the recording properties and select it. The last selection you made will remain the recording source until you change it. To get at your sound recorder it should be in the start menu. Start\all programs\accessories\entertainment. If it's not there, click start\run and type sndrec32. That should start the program. If it's there you can make a new shortcut to it. It should be in your windows\system32 folder.

    Zander,

    Thanks for the sndrec32 tip.

    1. Next....... I right clicked speaker icon in sys tray then L clicked adjust audio properties L clicked audio L clicked volume, mic was ticked went into properties and recording was checked.

    2. Next.....I right clicked speaker icon in sys tray then L clicked volume control/propreties and playback was checked.

    3. Next......I R clicked speaker icon in sys tray/volume control/properties and playback checked...changed this to recording/OK...up pops recording control with microphone checked, I checkout properties in that box and it brings up recording as checked but when I close that box go back into No.2 above.

I can get the sound recorder up but it won't record.

Can any one make anything positive out of the problem and details I have posted.

    Thanks and havagreatweekend

We're both going about this different ways. Try this. Double click the speaker icon. In the window that opens click options. Click properties and then tick recording. Click ok. Now you should be looking at the recording properties. Is mic checked?

    Yes, yes, yes, always yes.

The sound recorder does not "countdown" when record button is pressed regardless if one speaks or not.

    Good Morning Roy66

Did you run the Test Hardware?

"In Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices-the Voice tab
Then clik Test Hardware and run the test. During the test, the mic worked, voice recorded and the speakers played it back. "

The first several times I tried it, did not complete because it insists all other programs be closed. When I did that and was able to run that test-it indicated everything was ok including recording voice in Sound Recorder. Part of the Test routine is to have you read a paragraph into your mic-it plays it back and it will provide an answer as to the operability of your Sound Recorder.

    enjoy your weekend

    tom34228,

Been there done that, no luck. HOWEVER, as I went to lower the volume control I got an error popup. Run a DLL as an App

    Error Signature. App rundll.exe ver.5.1.2600.1106
    App version 5.1.2600.0 dpvoice.dll
    offset 00007ca3

It would appear that I might be missing the rundll.exe/dpvoice.dll

I have done a search for both of these and come up with nought.

    hawk22,

Not a stupid question at all.
    Where have you been.
That one should have been first off the rank.
I have been caught out on that one before with my monitor going blank on me.
Just wish that for this problem it was as simple as that.
Thanks for the thought...and I mean it.
We are all trying to help one another, that's what it's all about.

I even tried going back with sys restore but I could only go back a few days instead of weeks or months.

Thanks Roy you're just too kind,
Have you tried to download a recording program from the Internet, there are many trail and freeware recorders on the Market. That way at least you will find out if it is your present I presume MS or some other problem. I don't use MS anymore I have got myself COOL EDIT and haven't had any problems and from memory Cool Edit do have a light version for Trail.
    Just a thought Roy
hope you strike it lucky soon
