Outlook continues to run and appears in the Task Manager
Process box after I quit Outlook. I found a similar
item in the MS FAQ re:OL98; I'm using OL2002 on a WinXPPRO
machine. Sometimes, I get one or two additional
instances of OLXP after closing the one I was using.
I've made sure that no other users have anything open.
They do close when I terminate the process, but sometimes
when I reopen OL I get a message that it wasn't closed
correctly and offers to open in safe mode- not
consistently though, maybe 20% of the time. It seems to
not be happening as much since I've stopped allowing
Mailwasher to turn on OL after it processes mail on the
server, but it does still happen.
    Any help appreciated.

    Stephen,

I had a very similar, if not identical problem using Outlook 2000. There were at times multiple instances of Outlook in the "Processes" list of Task Manager, etc....

The fix?..... for me it was going to Outlook "Tools/Options/Other ".
    - Click "Advanced Options" in the "General" section (first one)
    - At the bottom of "Advanced ", click "COM Add-ins "
    - Uncheck anything you don't what to run.

In my case, I found "ICQ Express ", which I did NOT choose to be enabled or anything else. It was entered there by ICQ upon installation without my knowledge. Unchecking that item solved the problem and Outlook is working perfect once again. :D

Very interesting. I did as you described, but I only had one "add-in" listed [stamps.com] and it wasn't enabled. I think you are on the right track; I have a feeling it still has something to do with the MailWasher program, but I have not been able to track it down. MailWasher no longer automatically starts Outlook when it finishes processing... I'm wondering if my wife/son using it when logged on as other users could be doing something. Maybe the logoff procedure is not complete?
Other people must have some experience with this. MS knows it happened with OL98; maybe they just don't want to admit it still happens in XP?
    Peace,
    Wolf
