New computer, out of the box, xp already installed...i noticed the clock running slowly, losing about 13 seconds each minute. syncing the clock to internet time seemed to reset clock and set correct speed. however, after installing mcaffe firewall configured for dsl connection (via aol) clock is running slow again. resetting to internet time does reset clock, but doesnt reset clock speed anymore. even when i disable firewall, no luck.

The problem appears serious enough to engage the warranty on your new machine. Doing a system restore to the period prior to the questionable software and uninstalling that software would be a good starting point if it is not a faulty or low battery. A malfunctioning battery is the most likely problem and that would be covered under a warranty as well.

This is a very common problem with new Dell computers. I see it posted every day on their forum, sometimes several times a day.

    This works for some people:
Turn off the internet time synchronization in XP.

It didn't help mine.. my clock GAINS a couple minutes in 24 hours.

So I downloaded and installed free Rocket Clock:
    http://www.rocketsoftware.com/rockettime/screenshot.asp
I set Rocket Clock to reset my clock every 4 hours.
Now my clock is always accurate.
    :)

    Where did you download to?

I have a file that I named "Downloads ", that I download in to.. I made a new folder for everything I download and put in the Download folder.. you get this option just before download.

Go back to the site and start download again.. just to check to see where it's going.

After you find it, just click on "rockettime exe ". It will install in a flash. I always disable my Anti-Virus before installing programs.

"...very common problem with a new Dell computer. "

If Dell is aware of the common problem, why would they be sending out a problematic machine. I recently purchased a Dell 4400, and I haven't experienced any problems. Possible explanation I suppose is the time of purchase, my very recent purchase is OK!

Yes, you would think they would have taken care of that small problem by now.

I think it may be more common in the Dell 8200. I bought my 8200 12/07/01 and it had a fast clock. I have never seen a post about a fast clock.

It is being posted about every day on the Dell forum. Clock and noisy fans are the most common post on NEW Dell's out of the box.

    Maybe your just lucky! :D

My wife's new Dell 8200 has a slow clock. Not sure home much time it loses (as I don't use it very often) but it is seldom right.
