Hello, help please. I disabled (or deleted) my lpt1 port in effort to free up resources for other programs. Trouble is I don't know how to recreate the port to enable printing again. Any suggestions out there? Windows 98 using HP 3820 printer.

    Thank you.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.

Click on the Device Manager tab.

Click on the + sign next to Ports (COM & LPT).

If LPT1 is listed there, click on it and check in Properties to enable and disable it.

If LPT1 is not listed there, go to the Control Panel and double click on Add New Hardware and follow the instructions.

Thanks, Kevin. Have done the add hardware rec but all that is coming up is modem which I should remove from my motherboard to avoid confusion, using cable modem. Following theadd hardware it does not detect lpt1 port and I unsure what driver to use and whether to use printer port, com port, etc. out of the choices given.

Where does the driver file reside in 98, windows/system, windows, windows 98? and is it an .inf file? Other ideas are welcome?

    Thank you.

LPT1 is a printer port, does it show up in Device Manager?

You may have to open the case and make sure all your cables inside are snug.

You can also check in BIOS to be sure that LPT1 is enabled.

    Kevin,

lpt1 is not showing up in device manager and add new hardware is not doing the trick. I had dialup modem hardware which was
the only h/w detected before and this AM I removed it from
the motherboard and tried again. Still not detecting. Does it still reside in one of my system files or is is deleted forever?

Thanks for your assistance and interest.

Is the printer port built on to the mother board or is it attached by a small ribbon cable? If it's attached by a cable try unplugging the cable from the mother board and reseating it.

Did you go into the BIOS to be sure LPT1 is enabled?

Kevin. Problem solved by changing bios. I can now print as result of lpt1 port being detected. I was a little concerned because the one change in the bios caused all the other hardware, e.g. floppy drive to be detected again and I didn't understand why. Is this due to changing IRQs and address space to accomodate the new change?

The original problem (which I haven't mentioned yet) resurfaced. Feel free to disregard unless you have interest. Just got on cable modem and wanted to listen to out of town radio stations.
player works but due to conflicts no sound volume. This was how I had the lpt1 problem to begin with, because I zapped it when it gave me option to free up resources for internet sound capability. Sound worked at that point, is there something I can do to "have it all ". Clone system with 2-3 year old sound card.

Much thanks and have a great weekend.

Glad that problem is solved, now on to the next.

You may have to update the drivers for the sound card, newest drivers should be on the manufacturers web site.

There are other ways to free up resources. Go into msconfig (Start > Run > type msconfig > OK), under the Startup tab you'll find a list of things that run when you start your computer, a lot of which is unnecessary. Another way is to download and run Start-up Cop, I've never used the program myself but it comes highly recomended and it's free.

Beyond that more details would be needed.
