    SPECS:433 Celeron/384 Ram/Win98se/up to date BIOS/1-4gig hdd.
Once i'm booted to my desk top, nothing else running, not even screen savers, etc, my PC tells me it's using 100mb of RAM. How can that be? I know it has slowed noticably. I think W98se normally uses around 20-30mb(?). I have run defrag & scandisk on C:, D:, ram, & also ran scanreg fix but those tools haven't made a noticable difference in speed but have made a difference in the amount of ram being used which several days ago was 283mb & now it's only using 100mb of ram to run W98se. I have shut everything down from the startup group, but still 100mb ram in use.
I ran "sfc" & when trying to restore a file i kept getting the message "file not found" on C:, D:, or OEM w98se cd-rom. So how do i get the restore function to work? Why can't "restore" find the files which "I Know" are there? How do i get "Restore" to work? Could that be part of my problems? I also think that i have files that are loading during startup that are NOT identified in sysconfig utility's startup group. Actually, i have very little software on my PC. I'm sure there is something drasticly wrong. I hope Y'all can shed some light on these issues that will steer me back to something close to normal.
    Thanx Y'all, Regards, TUBA4

The name of the file would be a big help. However, I will hazard a guess that it is a IE file, and can be found in the IE setup files. If you happen to have the folder C:\Windows Update Setup Files, you can point SFC to it.
Windows will normally use 20 to 30 mb if you have 96mb or less installed, I believe. You have more ram available, and it is going to use it. Unused ram is wasted ram.
Go here and get Hijack This. It can produce a list of everything starting up on your computer. Click on Config, Misc Tools, then Generate StartupList Log. Post it here.

    Thanx for the quick reply!
A true wealth of info which will take me some time to peruse. I've been using "AdSubtract" for about 3 years & "AdAware" for about 1-2 years.
Nonetheless, i will check out your links & no doubt absorb at least some of the info.
I'm anxious to get to the bottom of my PC's issues. TUBA4

I wouldn't equate a slow system with the RAM usage. Information stored in RAM can be accessed in a matter of nanoseconds. I would say that a slow system is due to the Operating System having trouble loading information, accessing information from the drive/hardware or having to do tasks that are not required. You have a lot of RAM for the size of your processor, I doubt having more RAM available will speed things up.
Markp62's info on system cleanup seems spot-on. I would take it further and also clean out the registry. I use Norton Utilities WinDoctor. Depending on how long you've been running this install of Windows, it may be starting to "clag up" with old bits and pieces.

If any of this information seems to be wrong, pls correct me (I'm always willing to learn more:) ).

    Matt

BTW According to SiSoft Sandra I currently have 140mb RAM used, total RAM 256mb.
I have 9 programs in the System Tray and Task Bar.
    Ctrl-Alt-Del says 16 programs running.

markp62: The "Hijack this" scan yielded 14 entries. I don't know how to copy/paste it into this bbs. I hope you can you can guide me or perhaps 1 of the other readers can help me as the ordinary copy/paste function that i'm used to doesn't work here. TUBA4

    Hi T

Try copy/paste into notepad or wordpad then copy/paste that into the reply.

I had no problem dragging the file into wordpad but there isn't a "paste" function in the reply dialog window nor will it drag into the window. Thanx anyway. TUBA4

I'm not sure of your experience with Windows.
In Wordpad highlight the text (left-click and drag the cursor over it). Right-click on the text and select copy (or go to Edit/Copy). In the Reply window left click (typing cursor), then right click, select paste.

    Hope this is what's needed.

    Thanks mattman,
but the "right click" menu is grayed out. This may be another indication of the problem/s that i'm experiencing.

Let's try copy and paste via keyboard commands. Press and hold down left mouse buttion and drag the mouse over the text to be copied. Then press CTRL+C at the same time to Copy, then left click the mouse in the Reply window to get the cursor there. Then CTRL+V at the same time to Paste.

mattman/markp62: Thanx for your patience. My daughter stopped by earlier & she also was unable to copy/paste the info into the dialog window. There is no doubt that there is a problem within my W98se.
Obviously i'm not a power user. Apparantly my W98se is damaged & needs to be replaced. I only know how to fix these W98se issues by fdisk/reformat & that is such a pain because i always lose some files. (i hate when that happens!)
    Thanx for your efforts. TUBA4

You should get accustomed to backing up your important files. Try to keep them in one folder (My Documents?), although each software program will try to save a file in it's own home folder, so you have to change where the program saves that file or be able to find the file in the program's home folder in order to back-up.
I trust you have a CDRW, these are great for backing up. (Almost my entire system is recorded on CD, I could have my system running like it is now in about 1 hour). Some image type back-up programs are Norton Ghost and Drive Image. Writting software like Nero can do it, but can't copy the entire system (copying the whole system needs to be done in DOS). Windows Backup does not write to CD.
I'd recommend that you take a backup image of your system when it is all set up the way want and running "nice ". After that it is matter of keeping a regular back-up your personal files.

Don't know if you have all your data stored on one hard disk, but if you do and that should fail...

Have you noticed other problems besides those mentioned?

If Cut and Paste is broken then this is a basic windows function and there is definately more problems.

Try this run the StartupList function as directed. While it is on screen do a Ctrl A (this will hilite everything) then do a Ctrl C (this will copy all that is hilited). Then close StartupList open a message to us, in the message screen Rt Click and chose Paste.

The answer to your problem probably lies in this list, but if the above works or not do the following cleanups.

    First ==========================================

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

    Second========================================

    Cleanups

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

Type these commands exactly hit enter at the end (do not type the notes that are in parenthesis like this).

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)
    del c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree c:\windows\shelli*.*
deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* (answer yes to all) "ALL "
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\history\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

Lastly: Get the SpyBot advised above as it is far more andvanced than Adaware. Run it twice in a row! Delete all it finds. All! If anything is left after the second run then it is OK!

mattman,markp62,mflynn,et al: " Have you noticed other problems "? Yes, IE 5.5sp2 became unstable & froze so i bailed out & shutdown so i could go thru my lengthy maint. routine which includes; C:scanreg fix, C:scandisk & from safemode, win9x/me defrag & from start>run>cleanmgr, Ram defrag & Registry1stAid. Then i went to add/remove to do a repair of IE & guess what, it wasn't there. So i went to start>programs>accessories>sytem tools>system info & guess what, "sys info" was missing also. So from start>run>sfc so i could run it & replace any damaged files & guess what, when i tried to replace the 1st damaged file it told me it couldn't find the file on C: or on the WIN98se cdrom. When i try to do a backup from sys tools it tells me i don't have anything to backup to, when in fact i have a yamaha cdr/rw, ls120 & 31/2" floppy but "no" 2nd Hard drive, for now. I tried to send this post last Friday but my pc had other ideas about what it wanted to do with this post.
I don't have much software, eg; Quicken 2001 H&B, Turbotax, Adware, adsubtract pro, Netscape v4.79, "NO antivirus or firewall & that's about it.
I don't have "/sageset:1 or /sagerun:1" on this WIN98se, either from C:, dos window, or start>run>, can that be downloaded from somewhere?
I wish i could find a backup utility that worked like Quicken's & Turbotax "s, those are really slick.
I would also like to find an email utility that would allow me to block an incoming email at my ISP's server & remember it. For about 3 weeks & until last week i was getting over 1000 spams/wk from M$. I emailed them early on but they continued until late last week when they finally stopped.
I'm not inclined to go poking around the types of web sites that i'm given to believe may drop a free gift onto my PC nor do i open email that i don't recognize.
    However, 1st things first.
In order for me to email you with the "highjack this" info you will have to send me your email address. TUBA4
