I`ve got a new U.S.Robotics Modem with the factory installation CD. I`m installing it on a Win95B system. When I browse for drivers, XP and Win2K are there, but no 95/98/Me are visible. A support document for the USR5699B installation drivers, CD-ROM version NAM WM 1.2b on the Robotics site tells me.
"Windows 95/98/Me: D:\ (located in the root of D) "
    "Windows XP/2000: D:\Win2k_XP)
At the risk of appearing uninformed what does that mean? Where do I look? Windows tells me " no drivers at that location" I`ve tried the install every way I know of, on boot, new hardware, modem search, different slots on the MoBo, nothing makes it work. I`d just like to see something that says Win95 driver.
    Thanks.

Somebody might have the precise answer to your problem, but it may just be that no W95 driver is available for a brand new hardware item. Why not take this opportunity to upgrade to a later version of Windows? As you probably know, Microsoft has declared it will no longer provide support for W95.

Really know how to hurt a guy don`tcha. I`t`s a Moore failing.
I don`t know how to get to the " root of D" so I can look at it. Tell me how and I`ll tell you what I see.

    Go to...
    Start
    Run
    Type in D:
What you see there on your screen IS the root directory of D:\.

So, in order to point Windows to where the driver is you ~should~ just have to point Windows to D:\ .

    Hope this helps...

I retired early yesterday. Thanks, Dale, for picking me up.:)

Moore, The root of "whatever" means that it is a file that is not in a folder on the drive in question.

If you go to your C: drive in "My Computer" or Windows Explorer, you will see a lot of folders and, at the bottom of the right pane, you will see some files not in folders. That is the root of C:. ?

Windows found the driver using the "root of D" and installedthe modem. Looked good until I tried to dial up with it and it gives me the telephony error message. I`ve used up about all my patience removing and reinstalling in various ways. I`m beginning to think there`s something else wrong. I`m going to go the substitution route. I`ve got a spare computer with a working modem (and the drivers for same) and I think I`ll swap back and forth `til I discover what`s ******** up.
Patience is very necessary when you lack the knowledge.
    I`ll be back

One of the most frustrating things about running 95 thru 98 was trying to install modems. Some times it took four tries before it decided to take. XP has none of those problems. Just plug the bugger in and XP does it's thing.

If this is a winmodem, you may have to delete everything about any former modem you had including any entry in the registry having to do with modems.

In your control panel>modems, do you get a response on the diagnosis tab. Click on "more info" and see if you get the computer talking to the modem. If so, you may have to reinstall dialup networking.

It's a hair ripper alright!! Good luck.:)

I pulled the modem out of the spare computer and installed the drivers and it installed just like it fit there. Dials up and everything!
The next step is to take this new modem I`ve been fighting and see if it`ll install on the spare computer. If it installs there I don`t even want to hear any theories as to why. I`ll report back probably to morrow.

Thanks to all for the usual good advice.
I`ve got the computer on line, and I`m downloading some drivers for various gadgets.
I haven`t tried the new modem in the spare computer yet.I`ve got some other projects to tend to. Grass, mushrooms, fish.etc.
