My OS is Windows 2000 Pro

I have been receiving the following Error Message:

    “Windows "“ Delayed write failed.

Windows was unable to save all the data for the file xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

    The data has been lost.

This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere.â€

The file name and location xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx varies depending on the program I am using, but the message appears on booting and frequently throughout the day "“ but not every time I use the same program.

Does this mean that my hard drive is failing, or is there another explanation ( and remedy)???

does this url help: Click me

If you are always getting the error on a particular hard drive then it may be time to run a disk checker on it

I've checked and rechecked the drives several times but no change - in fact the problem is getting worse with error messages for every program I run.

I have uninstalled some programs and reinstalled them, and have 'repaired' Windows 2000 - all to no avail.

I think it may be time for another reformat!!

    Thanks all.

The reformat has solved the problem, BUT............

Windows 2000 has lost my second hard drive!!

It is present in the BIOS and in the hardware under drives and is said to be working OK, BUT ........... It is not shown in MY Computer or Windows Explorer.

Is there any way I can retrieve it?? It has all my Data from the preformatted C: drive backed up on it.

PS: should this be a new thread?

Was it a basic or a dynaimc disk?

If nothing else, boot up with a 98 boot disk and copy all of the info you want to save from the problem drive.

The missing drive is the slave drive - I don't know whether it is basic or dynamic (I don't understand this terminology).

I tried booting from win98 boot disk and also winME boot disk -

neither would recognise any of my drives because they are formatted NTFS!!

Try downloading an NTFS DOS viewer. There are some out there that will let you boot to a 98 or ME floppy then run the viewer from floppy and work with your NTFS files. If the info is really important, a last resort may be Partition Magic 5.??... the latest one. It will allow you to convert back to FAT32

I have run AIDA 32 which shows that the drive is there, but that the partition type is unknown. Does that mean the disk is corrupt??

I will try to get a NTFS DOS viewer as you suggest. If that fails I will try to get Partition Magic.

    Thanks again

I like the utilities from Sysinternals for looking at NTFS from DOS.

You didn't specify but were you able to turn off "delayed write "? If you could, the problem wouldn't exist since that would prevent caching data to write to the drive later.

I wasn't able to resolve the delayed write operation so I formatted my C: drive. After that I lost my second hard drive.

I have just found it with Partition Magic, but PM indicates that it cannot identify the partition type and therefore cannot change it to FAT32 or even back to NTFS. The only option on offer is to reformat - so here goes.

I thought I was safe with two large hard drives - one to work on and the other to back up - but it seems I will have to keep the backup backed up off my machine.

Thanks for all your help and for being out there!!
