    Hi

I know these are very different but would be grateful for advice.

When using Windows 98se I used OE as I did not have Office installed.
I now have Windows XP (HE) with XP Office. I still use OE as I am really using it for personal e-mails.

Outlook is on my PC therefore I was wondering if I should uninstall it as I am not using it for Office type applications OR is it a lot better to use than OE ? If so would I be better to start to use it instead.

I really don't know the precise details ( pros & cons ) I hope this is the correct section to post this as the other one seems to be just OE. Apologies if I should have posted there.

Grateful for any opinions on each application :)

When if comes to just sending and receiving e-mail, there isn't a lot of difference between OE and Outlook (I have both). Outlook is a lot more business oriented, with features like notes, forms, tasks, reminders, tracking of related messages, etc. I don't see a lot of difference unless you would use those features.

    OE vs Outlook

I have had both. Installed Outlook 2002 twice and removed it twice. If you need the other features of Outlook ( calendar, etc) then maybe it would be better but I found that OE did things like groups in an easier way than did Outlook.

I'm sorry I can't give you more details since it has been several months since I removed the Outlook

    Thank you

    Hi

I appreciate all the opinions on OE v Outlook.

I am going to have a look at the link now which will help very much.

I like the idea of notes but feel that the other features my be OTT for basically e-mails. There isa program on a disc with one of our PC magazines which is a little notebook type thing. This may be more what I need as it enables me to take notes when online eg from a forum etc

I am a bit too organised with notes & lists ..... even when using the PC !

Thanks again - off to read the info. in the link now :)

I find Outlook more reliable than OE.
Perhaps more difficult to save your mail folders individually, and
it has no News sites possibility in Outlook.
The calendar stuff etc, I never use.
If I remember, the reason I went off OE6 was it's annoying
habit of changing mail fonts as it wished in the middle of "compose a new mail ".
Import of adresses/mail into Outlook is a "no-no" because of
    it's database structure.
OE is better for these needs.
These two are still miles ahead of anything else on the market, tho' - Eudora, Pegasus, Incredimail etc have big promises but
    small rewards.
    regards

    More on OE

This does not relate directly to the thread but I had a problem once losing my OE Addressbook and found a great app addition to OE. Express Assist from www.ajsystems.com

This thing saves all selected folders and files from OE to another place and allows restoring. Lifesaver!

    Thank You

    Hi tenbob

I have just had a little browse to the link provided. I knew there were some programs relating to OE backups BUT any I had read about did not get a high rating. This one seems to actually work !

The fact that you have used it & it has saved the day proves this.

I note that it an evaluation copy but to purchase it is USA :(

How long are you allowed for evaluation ?

I have purchased US software downloads via RoseCity but they allow a link to pay in sterling. I would hate to evaluate & really like the program & then loose it as I cannot purchase in sterling ..... any advice on this would be appreciated. Just e-mailed re: payment.

    outlook express

I know how you feel about testing software. I did it for whatever period was allowed and then, rapidly, registered.

It has not failed me. Have used it for recovery as well as periodic saving. The best part for me was the address book recovery.

They will tell you about the payment method. Probably if you use VISA (or the like) it will automatically convert sterling to dollars for you. I have used VISA in other countries and the conversion rate was better than if I had exchanged currency in their local bank.

    A LLOONNGGG time ago ( Win95 ) I found a very good replacement ( or alternative ) for both.

Eudora setup on a partition other then C: and it does not get messed up if OE goes South on you. It is very close to a stand-alone program and works ( so far anyway ) on any version of Windows. even worked in XP with no re-install.

OE and Outlook both are very Windows/IE version dependent.

Eudora does not seem to be this way. I have upgraded and/or reinstalled several versions of Windows and am still using the same Eudora from the same folder on E: drive as I did in Win95.

I believe Calypso preforms about the same, From what I recall maybe even better.

I do not even have OE installed in 98SE and disabaled it in XP ( while I had it )

    XP & everything !

    Hi Billybob

I have only ever used 98se - I just used what I had with it BUT now that I have XP it seems altenatives are needed at times - don't know why but I seem to question things more now.

The one thing that does annoy me is the fact that IE & OE are so merged together. Even trying to 'Fix / Repair ' is not an easy thing.

Sometimes OE has a mind of it's own. I have some sort of e-mail program with StarOffice but haven't defaulted it to use.

OE is fine ( when it is doesn't decide to close itself down !) as it does the basics for me. As I have Outlook sitting on my desktop it made me wonder which was best. I don't want to use up resources with things I really don't need yet I wouldn't want to think there are things which I would use ( being an over-organised person ! )

If only it was back to the time that I just used the computer - no questions as to what does what !!!!

Regarding tenbobs OE backup program - they have replied already ~ seems I can pay in sterling if I wish to have the program after evaluation. I like it when someone takes time to reply :)

I find that very annoying also. Even in 98 SE. But luckily in SE I can completely illiminate OE from the HD. I do not think that is possible in XP.

That is just the reason I gave up on OE and went with Eudora. It is NOT intergrated into IE or the OS like OE is.

I have not lost an address or e-mail in years.

Everything is stored right within the Eudora folder.

    Hi

I wil know where to go looking if IE/OE upset me again !!

Thanks for the info. It is making me think ! Staroffice e-mail would be separate from XP ( I think ) but I do not know if anyone has used this one ...... At least Eudora comes with recommendation !

Computers for an easy life

Just a word of warning about Star Office.
If you ever want to uninstall all or part of it, you will spend many hours taking out stuff from the registry that was not removed during the uninstall. It's the worst uninstall I have ever come across.

    Thanks to both of you

    Hi

Thanks for the link - this looks very interesting. Will be reading up on it later.

Thank you for the info. on StarOfffice - I know most things leave their bits BUT this sounds like I am going to need to run Reg.First aid !

The only reason I installed it was that I wasn't able to install Word from Office XP on my desktop as I had it on my LT ( OEM's !!! )

I installed writer from the disc ( left out the rest )
I then discovered that my Old Word 2000 was before activation time therefore I could use this on my desktop PC.

I have only started to use SO - after reading this I may just uninstall it now as I haven't a lot installed on the desktop PC - It would at least help a little before there is too much to get through. Best to do before I start to install other things I need.
I really didn't realise it was one of those invading programs :(

Hopefully it's bits are easy to find !

I converted from OE to Outlook at work one time (Use Eudora at home) and the incompatable address book was the only issue I had. As mentioned before, there are programs that help in import and export of these but it seemed really silly to me that this would require the purchase of a $50 program for a potentially one time use. Why can't Outlook take care of what is essentially it's own upgrade!

Well I found a work around that sure helped me. You can open both programs and drag and drop the individual addresses from the windows address book (OE) to Outlook. I don't know about the reverse of that.

You may then have to go into each Outlook address and rearrange some of the fields, but this gets the gruntwork out of the way.:)
