I usually check the Windows Update site every week to check for any updates. It's been a while since I've taken a look, but today when I tried to scan for new updates Windows Update would always freeze at 0%.

There was a suggestion to update jscript.dll from the MS website to fix this problem, which I did, but it still freezes at 0%.

Does anyone here know how to get this site working again?

I'm using Windows XP Professional, btw.

    Thanks,

    MadCow

    Thanks for the site, PeteC.

This will have to do for now until someone can help me figure out a way to get Windows Update scan for updates again.

Lots of possibilities at this site

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

    ==================================================

One of the troubleshooters reads as follows:
    Problem Description:
When you’re using the Windows Update Web site you receive a dialog box that states:
"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...
Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. To
ensure that you're able to view Windows Update when this verification
is complete, select Yes in any "Security Warning" dialog boxes that
appear." The update process freezes at this point.

    Resolutions:
This may be caused by a third-party firewall product called Zone Alarm. Try disabling this program and opening the Windows Update site again. Be sure to enable your firewall again when you are done.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Issue Applies To:
    Windows XP Client
    Windows 2000

There is a wealth of info on this subject in previous posts going back months, as a fix could be one of many possibilities. Do a search in this forum on windows update.
Some of the info may actually be helpfull? ;)

    Thanks for the replies.

    Barbara-Ann:
I've checked the troubleshooting section of the Window Update site, and nothing there applies to my situation. I do not receive any errors--the Windows Update scan just freezes at 0% (IE doesn't freeze, nor any program; it's just that the Scan does not progress any further).

There is no firewall on my computer or my network. I've recently used Windows Update on a computer client on my Network running Windows ME, and it worked fine, so nothing should be wrong with my connection to the site.

I've checked the BBS on the Microsoft Site for Windows Update users, and I found a suggestion to update the jscript.dll with a file from the MS Tech Support site. This, however, did not resolve my problem.

    Paul:
I've used the search feature on the forums to look for any cases similar to mine before posting, however I was unable to find anything helpful to my problem.

Nontheless, I shall check again and hopefully I can find a working solution.

    Thanks,
    MadCow

Windows Update finally was able to scan for updates completely.

I just unchecked the box for "Automatically detect settings" under the Connections Tab in Internet Options.

Windows Update now seems slower than normal.

    Thanks for all your help,
    MadCow

    Yep,
I recall I mentioned that tip of switching off "Automatically detect settings" several months ago. It caused me grief for a couple of months till I experimented and only set a manual proxy (or none depending on the ISP preferences).

    Windows Update

This happened to me. The reason for me was that I have McAfee firewall and anti virus. A suggestion from a friend of mine, who also happened to have the same problem for the same reason (he also as the same version of McAffee) worked for me. Windows XP updates easily. Here is my friends suggestion.

If you click on START & then click on Help & Support and then click on Windows Updates and then click on scan for updates, our computers have stuck on 0%.

To fix this problem, I searched the Windows XP Newsgroups and found the answer, which I have attached in a word file.
The first 2 solutions which I have not shown applied if you had Netsonic Internet Accelerator installed, but used method 3 and hey presto the updates now work.

    Method 3
Turn off Automatically detect settings in Microsoft Internet Explorer:
    1. Start Internet Explorer, and then on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    2. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
    3. Click to clear the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK two times.
    Method 4
Manually download and install the Windows Update controls:
    1. Create a folder on your desktop to temporarily store the controls.
    2. Visit one of the following Microsoft Web sites to download the Windows Update controls file:
o If you are using Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, or Microsoft Windows Server 2003, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/unicode/iuctl.cab
o If you are using Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/ansi/iuctl.cabp
    3. Save the Iuctl.cab file to the folder that you created on your desktop.
    4. Right-click the Iuctl.cab file, and then click Extract to.
    5. Point to the folder that you created on your desktop, and then click Extract.
    6. Open the folder on your desktop, right-click the Iuctl.inf file, and then click Install.
    7. Delete the folder that you created on your desktop.

I hope this works for you

    Thanks for the replies, again.

Turning off 'Automatically detect settings' within the Connection Options of Internet Explorer did the trick.
