Strangest thing but maybe someone has come across this.

In control panel the "Add and Remove Programs" applet does not work.
You can double click it or right click on it and select open and nothing happens.
Any ideas at what file needs to be replaced?

    Try accesing in safe mode.

    Still no go?

Cleanup temps both internet and windows.

Clean registry if you know how if not get back to us.

Look at starups to see if you have something strange.

Let us know and we will delve deeper.

    Thanks,
I won't be able to bring the machine down till either tonight or tomorrow night.

I forgot to install IIS (didn't think I would need it)
And Trend Office Scan has to have it.

I know Trend Office Scan doesn't need IIS to operate on XP-pro. I'd be real surprised if 2K-pro needed it either.

For servers, I think their Server Protect is lots better. Central management is a snap when compared to the minimal management you have with Office Scan.

Could it be a group policy setting?
Have you checked with your admin?

John I am the admin :(

    Newt,
This is Trend Micros "Client Server Messaging Suite "

    Three products in one suite.

    ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange
    ServerProtect
    and,
    OfficeScan Corporate Edition
OfficeScanâ„¢ Corporate Edition provides efficient antivirus protection for desktop and mobile clients. The centralized, server-based management features in OfficeScan allow administrators to manage and enforce antivirus policies for the entire organization, while providing client PCs with reliable and transparent protection and Damage Cleanup Services.

The management console to administrate office scan uses IIS to push the policies to the clients.

Still hadn't had a chance to bring the server up in Safe Mode.
Machine is 100 miles away so hopefully next week I will get a chance to get up there.

I see that you are going to lose some of your weekend by traveling 100 miles so I gave your problem more thought and a little more research.

My suggestion to try safe mode of course would not fix the problem but confirm it was a configuration coming from something in full mode and confirm no problem with Add/Remove itself. If it worked in safe mode!

Found this! Sounds like your problem.

    http://wintrouble.net/discus/messages/53/3152.html

A better way to reinstall may be this:

    rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

Maybe if you haven't left yet you can do this remotely. How are you accessing the Server? If thru terminal services or PCAW you could set it temporarily to do an auto logon so you can reboot remotely if necessary.

I read your Profile and saw you are a fellow professional so I understand. I admin 62 networks (over 1000 ws) in 6 states farthest one being in Carson City Nevada. Sr. Systems Admistrator/Analyst for past 14 years, in the business for 25 yrs now. So believe me I dread taking off to fix something like this!

Also looked at your Web site I am a Drag racing fan. In my younger days I was a bad "ah hum" street racer. I bought the first 1969 Mach1 428 CobraJet Mustang in my hometown of Lexington N.C. Ram air induction thru the hood from the factory. Man! I miss that car! Should have never sold it.

All I ever did to it was oversize jets run only Sunoco 360 and sometimes a few gallons of 120-octane aircraft gasoline added to this. Dyno tuned then power timed by moving the timing manually to just below the ping point.

Then only thing I couldn't beat was the Sox and Martin built Roadrunners that ran slicks on the street. Although I did get a few of them occasionally. The problem was I could not get traction had to baby it off the line. Did not ever want to run slicks on the street.

We used to do a "kick at twenty" drag (do you remember those) and nothing absolutely nothing could beat me here. Got so no one would even run me. Even though it would still break traction it was more controllable.

When I special ordered it Ford kicked back the 4:30 ratio so I tried to order 3:90 (they were available but such demand was in back order) still not available so finally had to accept 3:50 traction lock. Best thing that happened because even at 3:50 it would lay down 2 black marks that looked like you had driven thru wet asphalt for 2 blocks. It would burn thru 1st and 2nd gears and several feet into 3rd. I took it past 120 and it was only half way wound out in 3rd. I never took it past there so I don't know what it would do in 4th.

I ran H70 street tires. One of my friends measured the distance between the black marks at 10 inches on a full power shift. I was good with the gears best around here!

Anyway enough reminiscing! Thanks for bringing it back to me.

I will be in and out over the weekend if you have already left or are there I will keep a check if I can help. If we sync at the same time.

    Good luck,

    Mike

    WOO HOO!!
Reinstalling IE 6 did the trick!!
    Thanks very much!
I never would have thought IE was even remotely involved in this problem.
