Is there a way to protect certain sections on a word document. I'm creating a template & I want to protect areas so that a user can't change the information.

I know Excel can but how to do it in word.

I don't now how to do this in Word, but you can insert some
Excel cells from a sheet and protect the sheet.

 Take a look at the help section. What you need to do is go to tools, then protect document, then choose forms. The Office Help file will explain in detail how to protect sections of your Word form.
