I have read several messages regarding problems with Windows Update and thought my bad experience might help someone else. I had used Norton System Works2002 and Norton Personal Firewall2002 for nearly a year and they both worked flawlessly. I purchased and installed the 2003 version of these two products and for two weeks I had nothing but problems including problems with Windows Update. I received the persistant "Windows Update is looking for available updates...0% Complete ". Symantec had me uninstall and reinstall these two programs at least three times and I reinstalled IE6SP1 twice. I will copy the contents of a message I received yesterday from Symantec Online Technical Support. I returned to using the 2002 versions yesterday and everything is back to working okay including Windows Update.

    "In your message, you wrote:
    > I clicked Windows Update and the program remained on "Windows Update is looking for available updates...0% complete" until I closed the window ten minutes later.

It is not recommended to install Norton Personal Firewall (NPF) and Norton AntiVirus (NAV) on a dual boot machine. The following article provides more details regarding this issue:
Title: 'Installing NIS or NPF to a dual boot computer'

The following article makes reference about installing NAV on a dual machine:

    Very Interesting !

    Hi

Thank you for posting your experience with Norton & updates ..... I have also used Symantec from day ONE of owning a PC. I have never had any problems with the software. NIS + NAV + Systemworks + Ghost ...... on Windows 98se

I am now using XP (HE) and like yourself have been told to uninstall / reinstall when a problem occurs - I don't remember having to do this previously......

Although I have now dispensed with my Dual Boot - I was not aware at all about these problems. One thing I do know it was Speedisk (part of Systemworks which corrupted my 98se side of the boot !!! ) I am certainly not using Systemworks with XP.

I have the software on my laptop & get the most frustrating error message in ocassionally. ' Cannot read Subscription status you may need Admin. rights ! This can appear on or offline.
Solution - unistall then re-install by doing a clean boot of Windows - does NOT work ...... if the message appears I just close it.

I still have NIS 2003 installed & can retrieve updates etc but feel that they do not have things running as smooth as the other versions did.

Make sure & disable the software BEFORE downloading from Windows Update - that's not to say the patches here do not cause more trouble themselves
