I had posted this thread a couple days ago, however my user name was not appropriate, and my post was del. My apoligies to everyone here :( . I am truly sorry about that.

I did receive an email saying that PeteC replied to my question, I'd be very greatful if he, or someone else could do so again.

My question is how can I check if my version of XP is 64 bit or not?

    Thanks alot

    Hi Buddy....

    Let' try again :)

The chances of you having the 64 bit version of XP is as remote as winning top prize in the Lottery.

The 64 bit version is for advanced workstations, CAD applications, etc. If you have XP Home it is 32 bit, if Pro 99.99999....% certain it will be 32 bit too.

    See this for more info:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/techinfo/planning/techoverview/default.asp

I guess if you right click on My Computer and select Properties it would tell you if you have the 64 bit version - 32 bit is not mentioned here BTW.

If you're running a beta of Longhorn, it's 64 bit, but you won't notice anything different about it, unless you have a 64 bit CPU and motherboard/ram to go with it. (Xeon or somesuch).

    thanks for the responce guys
your prolly right PeteC that I don't have 64 bit ver. I am running XP Pro not XPHome. I was just curious.
reboot i have a P4 Northwood 1.8 with HyperThread (so PowerPack 2003 tells me), if that means anything about the 64 bit proc. However I prolly don't have that either. hehe

    Tx guys

No, a P4 with hyperthreading is still a 32 bit CPU, although the HT technology can increase speed in some applications because of the (theoretical) dual processing, that is, processing two instructions at one time, within the CPU. Not the same as dual CPU's, and still not the same as 64 bit.
The bits refers to the bus width, for data flow inside the CPU. Matched up with a 64 bit motherboard, and a 64 bit operating system, it gives some serious speed, because of the total bus width. A 32 bit CPU, still has a 32 bit wide bus, and uses the speed of the cpu and ram to determine data flow rate.
To avoid confusion, think of the bus as a real bus.
One that is 1 passenger long, but 32 wide, going down the highway. Now double the width of the highway, and double the width of the bus (to 64) and you see where the speed comes from. It's not travelling any faster, but it is carrying twice the people.
That's oversimplified, but the theory is sound.
