When i try to use Scandisk within Windows my pc tells me that it can't scan drive D (73gb) due to not having enough available memory. This happens with no other progs running (obviously).
however if i reset my pc and the pc scans all my drives on restart it CAN scan that drive.
I can scan my other drives within windows with no problem. My D Drive is the biggest (C:38gb, D:73gb, E:29gb, F:9gb).
I used partition magic 8.0 to partition my drive (120gb) and run Windows 98.
    Any thoughts???
    Cheers!

    Is E a separate drive as C to F = 149Gb ie (120+29)Gb ?

    OK

I'm glad it turned out that way because it separates the two drives over 32Gb since if it worked for C then why not D.

Your cluster size on D may be too small.

    Check this out.

Let me know how you get on.

i had a look at the link you sent me but i'm not sure what to do next :(
i went to the Samsung site since it's a Samsung HDD..but could find no file or patch to download that would solve my problem.
any chance of a step for a hint please?..
    cheers

Run Partition Magic and check the cluster sizes. I've got V5.0 so the manual has probably changed in the meantime.

If the cluster size on D is less than 32Kb then this can be increased by Partition Magic; it wil take a while to complete. If the cluster size is 32Kb then the link I gave you isn't the solution.

The 32Kb isn't a minimum requirement - it's the default for 32Gb and above. It's the 8Kb point that is at issue but if less than that was applied on D then I'd wonder why it wasn't applied to the other partitions and you would have had trouble with them as well.

Anyway, check out the cluster sizes on D, E and F.

you were right..my D Drive cluster size was 16k..i used pm8.0 to change it to 32 and now i can do a scan disk no problem..thanks!!!
any idea what would have made the pc choose 16k cluster size in the first place??

    thanks for the help!!!:D :D :D

Nothing to do with your 'pc'. That would have been done when you partitioned it with PM8. Great news!

If you get the time it may be worthwhile to check how much conventional memory you have when windows is running compared with when you are in DOS at the Command prompt only.

From the DOS box run 'mem /f > memw.txt'. That will tell you the position in Windows. Then pop into DOS and run 'mem /c > memd.txt'.

Compare the two text files [in the root folder if run from C:\>] and you'll see how much conventional memory you are down when running Windows. In my case I have 604Kb conv. mem. when Windows is running and 624Kb when in DOS. The amount of conventional memory you have will impact on such things as scandisk and scanreg for example.

If your figures are very much less than mine then pop over to here to get info on increasing conv. mem. from the horses mouth.

Oops, that 2nd mem should have been mem /f as the 1st one. There are a few switches - /f is a concise version.

Check out mem /? for the rest - assuming you don't know about mem, that is.

    1st drive 39gb...C Drive

If your C: drive is actually that size and is actually 32K cluster, do you realize how much space you are WASTING ?

Each of those 100s of 300-500 BYTE shortcuts etc. is taking up 32K of space.

    32,000 -500BYTES 31,500K of Wasted Space.

    31,500 x 200 = app 6.3gig of space.

I think that 6gig could be put to much better use as another partition to more saftely store data on.

    These are my thoughts anyway
