IE6 not "pointing" anywhere

I have a rather strange problem. When I "point" my browser (IE6) to certain sites I get the "cannot find server" message yet when I point to others everything loads OK. For example I cannot access msn.com or google but I can access this site (hence I am posting this message). IE is also loading very slowly which I thought might be due to one of the recent M$ updates but problem persists despite uninstalling it.
I am running XP Pro on ADSL connection with a home network. Everything was working just fine until 2 days ago. Anyone any ideas?

 

Yes I have ideas!

First go to command prompt

type
ipconfig /flushdns

then
ipconfig /renew

exit

Now test for problem. If problem still exists then something has walked on your winsock.

Go here download and run winsock fix.

Thanks mike, am trying to cure the same problem, but the web address you've given comes back as one of those sites I can't get onto!!!

Other things can cause similar problems so if per chance it does not do the job for you get back to us with:

Your OS
And if you clean Spy/Adware
Had a Virus recently
other problems

If it does fix it, then something caused it so at least do Spybot:

Spyware and adware removal

SpyBot http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Run this twice delete all it finds, "ALWAYS" run this before AdAware.
Leave all it wants to leave after the second run.
