In Device Manager under 'Non-Plug and Play Drivers' is a listed device 'Serial'. It has the yellow exclamation on the icon.

    In it's 'Properties':
    • Device type: Non-Plug and Play Drivers
    • Manufacturer: Unknown
    • Location: Unknown
    • Device status: This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)
On the 'Driver' tab, the 'Service name:' and 'Display name:' are both 'Serial'. The driver details button indicates 'Serial.sys' in System32\drivers folder from Microsoft file version 5.1.2600.1106 (sp1.020828-1920). There are no updates from either Microsoft or Fujitsu for this. 'Uninstall' leads back to the same situation.

Now, there isn't a problem - yet - but would like to stave off any if this could lead to one. Any ideas what exactly this is and how to resolve?

Is this a Fijitsu laptop? If not!

It appears that someone in the past has attached a Fujitzu 7631 Lifelink laptop computer to this box using a serial cable. Probably to Xfer files.

It could have been a USB cable since Serial.Sys provides that. Here we have a case of XP trying to remember the connection.

    Three things to try.

    1. command prompt
    type

    net use

if it reports this device is listed

    then type

    net use %DeviceNameReported Above% /delete

    if not then

    2. Browse registry to (if above fails should not be here but check anyway)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Network\Persistent Connections

if the Fijitsu is listed here delete

    3. If no device reported by net use or the registy.

    Boot to safe mode.

    Rename serial.sys to serial.bruce.

Search the registry for the Fijitsu 7631 an delete it.

    Clear the event logs.

Boot up once with serial.sys still renamed. May get an error or two booting.

Check for the existance of this device in device mgr. Look at event logs.

Then gone or not rename the serial.sys back to normal. Reboot.

Recheck. Also look at event logs for any info again.

This don't work, I am outa ideas.

    Hi, Mike ~

    Thanks for your reply.

The 7631-C is the LifeBook series notebook. I am the original and sole owner/user of this unit. Never used a serial cable nor USB cable on this unit. No connections for XP to have remembered. Only peripherals ever attached have been USB mouse and parallel printer.

Well it is possible that the factory did it and it got put in a production line image.

I have found stranger things from factory. I beleive HP to be the worst about this.

Try the rename of serial.sys I advised etc or forget it! Probably no harm anyway.

    Have a good day Bruce.

I figured it may have somehow been re-enabled in BIOS and was gonna change that, but after updating a PCI bus driver, the serial device indication has disappeared!
