    I have tried numerous times to install the latest Cumulative Patch for Internet Explorer (813489). Each time it goes so far and then locks when it is copying shdocvw.dll to the windows/system directory. I have tried in safe mode as well and also downloaded the file twice in case it was corrupted. According to Microsoft Update the patch has been installed, but I am not so sure. As the file shdocvw.dll has been copied into the windows/temp folder, I can see that it is a later version than that already in the windows/syestem directory. Has anyone else had this problem or any ideas. I am running Win98SE and IE 6.

    To double check if it has been installed, go into IE, Help, About IE and see if the number is listed in the updates.

    Thanks for the tip BurrWalnut. It is not listed.
    So how do I install it? I assume that shdocvw.dll must be in use so cannot be updated. Any idea what it is running.

    You could try downloading it from Windows Update Catalog, which appears in the left pane of windows update.

    Click on the catalog and enter your operating system and critical updates. Select the correct one into your download basket and save it. Log off the web and disable any running programs. Then go to the file (Q813489.exe) and double click it.

    I hope this works.

    Have you tried repairing IE and then trying the install?

    I've never got into the intricacies of IE but you could try renaming any files that appear to be stopping the install.

    I suggest you put the word "old" in front of any files you rename so that you can easily remember what they were originally called.

    Good luck

    Thanks again but I don't think I will take that route yet. Perhaps someone else will come up with a suggestion. I can't believe I am the only one that has had this problem. IE is working fine in any case. I was just keeping it updated as advised by Microsoft.

    I can't get that to download either, but my IE is not allowing me onto secure sites, did find a lot of helpful stuff on the microsoft site, gives you some good ideas on "what" to try.

    This may Help

    Hi

    There is a download toll which checks if Quickfixes are installed properly on your PC. It may just help you to find out if soemthing went wrong or if it's there or not.

    Download & install to hard drive & then proceed to check. It is only a small download.

    Look here QFECHECK.EXE

    Hope this does help out ;)

    I think you'll find that qfecheck only shows the Windows updates, you have to look in IE, Help, About IE to determine which IE updates you have.

    I installed 813489 and 330994 last week and they both show up in settings/control panel/add/remove. It does not show up under the help about IE. I guess this means they can be uninstalled, which is the first time I have found any updates in the add/remove.

    As I understand it, qfecheck is for Windows 2000 and XP, not 98.
    I also have 330994 showing in Add-Remove. There is no doubt in my mind that 813489 has not installed correctly. I could try running the install program from dos. The file shdocvw.dll is running which I presume is why it will not copy.

    Qfecheck comes with Win98SE and WinME.

    Additionally, you could download Aida from http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php and select hot download on the left. It definitely shows updates but if I remember correctly sometimes it contains errors. However it is an excellent program to find out about everything on your computer.

    Perhaps it's worth trying to remove this patch with the control panel add/remove program listing. Reboot computer. Delete the windows\ temp file and recycle bin and do a fresh d/l and install in safe mode or at least with running programs in background closed. Sorry if you've tried this. I see that you've tried to re install. I wasn't sure that you'd tried the uninstall of the patch first, before trying to reinstall.

    Thanks Alicia and Alice.
    Yes I do have IE6 SP1. I cannot uninstall the patch as it does not show up in add/remove. I have tried shutting all programs and running the Q813489 file again with the same result. It just sticks when copying the files. However closer inspection shows that it seems to have copied all the system files as those in the system directory are the same as those in the Windows/Temp directory. It looks like it may have installed the patch but will not register it.
    Unless anyone has any more ideas I think I will just leave it until the next update.

    This is from http://support.microsoft.com/?id=813489
    ==========copy/paste=========

    To verify that this update has been installed on your computer, use any of the following methods:

    * Confirm that Q813489 is listed in the Update Versions field of the About Internet Explorer dialog box.
    * Compare the versions of the updated files on your computer to the File Information section of this article.
    * Confirm that the following registry key exists and contains an IsInstalled DWORD value that is set to 1:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{F9C174E3-3E87-40bc-AA94-B8974F2B9222}
    [snip]
    The following files are installed in the %Windir%\System folder in Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition. [snip]

    Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (32-bit)

    Date Time Version Size File name
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    24-Feb-2003 17:31 6.0.2800.1170 2,787,840 Mshtml.dll
    24-Feb-2003 17:32 6.0.2800.1170 1,339,904 Shdocvw.dll
    24-Mar-2003 19:18 6.0.2800.1170 483,328 Urlmon.dll

    [snip]
    Removal Information
    To remove (uninstall) this update, use the Add or Remove Programs (or Add/Remove Programs) tool in Control Panel. Click Internet Explorer Q813489, and then click Change/Remove (or Add/Remove)
    =======end c/p============

    If your Windows\System folder contains the updated files listed above then I wouldn't be too concerned. However, if your Windows\System folder does NOT include the file versions specified (shown by r-clicking the file(s) and selecting Properties, Version tab) then try emptying C:\Windows\Temp, disable your antivirus program and all other running applications, redownload the IE6 SP1 32-bit version of the patch from the site I gave before and try again, after a fresh reboot. If that doesn't help then I would suggest you run the IE Repair, accessible from Add/Remove, Install/Uninstall, Microsoft Internet Explorer. See http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q194/1/77.ASP

    Thanks Alice,
    The files have been updated OK as I suggested previously. It has not updated the registry, It does not show in add/remove and it is not in the "About" in IE6. Is it worth updating the registry manually or try the IE repair.
