I apparently have bad winsock files. I can connect to my isp but not to the internet. My computer came with the files installed on it, therefore I don't have a setup disc. I need new windows 98 winsock files or something to fix mine. Help, thanks....

The program sounds like what i need, but the computer that needs the fix cannot connect to the internet. I need something that I can save to disc from this computer and apply to the other one.

Then why not save it to floppy? It's only 60kb?

The procedure states that the dowload must go directly to the affected computer. I t cannot be saved to disc on one computer and then applied to another. Does anyone know if I could use a copy of the winsock files from the windows XP and put them on the windows 98 and have them run correctly? Thanks, sammyzoo

Really? Sorry about that. The way I read, it said it couldn't be run from the floppy. Not that it couldn't be copied from the floppy, put to desktop and run from there.

    *edit*
    Perhaps try this one then?

Welcome to the "best" the WindowsBBS!

I are a poet! LOL! I make slogans and don't even know it! LOL!

Sammy let others know what caused this so they can beware.

Also either program could be downloaded and copied to a floppy very small files. Even from the Desktop they can be copied. Smile.

    Congratulations sammyzoo
Glad you got it resolved. May be time to do some housecleaning and run Ad-aware to clean out any spyware?

    BAD FILES....

WHEN I DOWWNLOADED A KAZAA MEDIA PLAYER, THERE WAS A PROMPT ASKING IF I ALSO WANTED NEWDOT DOWNLOADED ALSO THERE WAS A DEFAULT "YES" AND I LEFT IT. IT WAS THAT "NEWDOT" PROGRAM THAT CAUSED ALL MY GRIEF. WHENEVER I REBOOT MY SYSTEM, I HAVE ALWAYS HAD AN ERROR STATING "CANNOT FIND PROGRAM NEWDOT, NEWDOT.DOT.DLL. I COULD NEVER FIND ANY PROGRAMS USING THAT FILE, OR FIND THE FILE DURING A SEARCH, SO I COULD NEVER DELETE IT. I DIDN'T GET THAT MESSAGE AFTER I REBOOTED AFTER RUNNING THE WINSOCK RESTORE PROGRAM......IT'S FINALLY GONE!!

Sammyzoo? Please tap on your Caps key? You're typing in all capitals, and it gives the appearance that you are upset.

Download and run the link I posted above. I'd bet dollars to donuts you've still got spyware that needs to be cleaned out.

    Sammy

    You should run SpyBot http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

before Adaware. Run SpyBot twice select all it finds. Leave anything it will not remove after the 2nd run. Then run Adaware.

Because of the lack of updates of Adaware when Adaware tries to remove a newer version of "CommonName" it will kill the Winsock. This is what Sammy described above. In his case it was the manual remove that caused his problem. Unless he did in fact use Adaware which he did not mention.

When he tells us what it was it will be CommonName or NewDotNeT most likely. Adaware does not know how to properly remove these any longer and will disable Winsock.

ATTENTION EVERYONE USING ADAWARE! See this thread!

    http://windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=64854#post64854

And my reccomendations is currently the last post!

    Uh Oh

    We crossed in the mail!

    See what I mean!

Sammy abort the Kazaa. and get the Kazaa lite it has no baddies attached.

Now for sure you need to do the SpyBot Adaware!

I will post a link is a minute when I find it.

    2nd Adaware

Then install Kaza Lite. It is clean.

I cannot connect to the internet using explorer 5 on 98SE. I had a wireless broadband connection and got rid of it for a wired connection. I uninstalled the old software and now have a wired connection with router up front. I can ping the router from the run command but cannot get a connection through the browser and yes the browser connection settings are correct, could winsoc be the problem or is it just used for dialup. any suggestions??

No the winsock is for any connection.

It will hurt nothing to repair it.

    BUT!!!!

If you are sure the settings are correct do this. Ping your ISP's DNS, there are 2 a primary and a secondary. If you can not ping them then you do not have the settings correct.

    this way

    Test for yahoo

    command prompt

    ping yahoo.com

    should get 3 sucessful replys

    ping 66.218.71.198

should still get replys from yahoo

    now try your dns
