    Hi all,

I am currently running AVG 6.0 (free version) and got a supossed
virus in Temporary Internet Files C:\TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES\Content IE5\8LifeShure\121212~1.00. I was running Panda Antivirus and had some conflicts with the fire wall so I un installed it and got this free version as I had spent my alloted funds for antivirus on Panda.

#1 When the virus was found it gave the the descritption and gave the above and a location (could be a script/exploit)

#2 Said it was unremovable and would quarintine it and it did.

#3 I looked in Temp Internet Files and found it there so I deleted all Temp Internet Files. Is the virus gone by deleting the Temp Files and just sitting in the quarintine now?

#4 Is there a better virus scan out there that I could be useing?

#5 No matter what scan I use how will I know that they are up to date on viruses? I am not to happy about useing a free ware but I had to try to protect my puter with something until I get the conflict taken care of with my purchesed version of Panda 7.04

I am a beginner and still do not understand all aspects of files and whats safe to delete or not maybe you can direct me to a site for some reading on this matter?

Am I safe now or not? I re ran the virus scan and it told me no viruses found. How can I be sure its not over looking other viruses?

Thanks so much for your time

I use, and am fond of AVG......but I check it daily for updates, rather than wait for it to update automatically.

If you're ever in doubt of whether your AV has rid you of the virus, do an online scan at housecall.

    Hi again FireDancer
I'm not sure why you'd want to tackle the resgistry?
Are you unsure whether your AVG is up to date? If so, Double click on the icon down by the clock. It will tell you your virus database number, as well as date. Mine says 273 and 24/04/2003.

Yes, except for the quarantine, which you can delete.
Is there a better virus scan out there that I could be useing?
AVG found it on access of the file, it did it's job well. I do know of one that would detect it upon creation, eSafe Desktop, but that one is no longer free.
How can I be sure its not over looking other viruses?
You can ask this question of any AV program available. That is why doing Housecall to get a second opinion is a good idea, like medical doctors.
Norton and AVG gets the updates available as fast as humanly possible. If someone was to code up a new virus or a variation of an existing one, you can't expect them to email it to a AV company so that they can update their detection tables. The Bugbear virus when it came out, the first thing it did was disable Norton. Norton has fixed this problem as soon as they could. But, the Norton users had to get the update.

There is the Eicar test file which can be safely used to test any AV program. There are four versions of it there. However, deleting the eicar.com file may be tricky, as when you right click on it, it is scanned and identified and initial access is denied. The zipped and double zipped versions would test the deep scanning abilities of the on-demand scanner [AVG passes!]. The text version would test the abilities to detect viral code in any type of file [AVG, again, does it].

I can't blame you for feeling a bit apprehensive about free software. But, some of the freeware concerning security; Sygate, ZoneAlarm, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, AVG, online Housecall, the list goes on, are rated as the better programs out there.
There is a file available called Leaktest that will test the abilities of your firewall to stop outbound traffic. ZA, and Sygate passes [both free], Blackice Defender [you pay for this] and XP's firewall fails.
I know I sound like I am ranting for these freeware's, but the truth is out there. It is not just my opinion.

    Thanks both of you

mine has the number too!! 273 4/24/2003, I will do some reading on the virus stuff thanbks both for the enlightenment and the sites. I guess for now i will stick with the AVG and run it for a while, I just hate paying for a AV and not getting it to work right and looseing the money. I purchased panda some while back and it started haveing problems with the built in fire wall hanging things up and causing locks since I uninstalled it no more problems :) Im currently running the free ZoneAlarm too I like it its easy to use and understandable. Have a great weekend both of you
    Thanks again
