hi i used to use the windows 98 post but a christmas gift got me an e-machines 1.8ghz 40g hard drive new toy with xp and since i was using a 200mhz pentium 2 i thought there would be drastic differences in speed and i am actually wondering if my old was faster than my new.

it starts when you move the mouse to end screensaver and have to wait 30 seconds or more as it slowly peels away then you click on iexplore icon and wait as it comes up (using roadrunner cable internet so connection speed is not the problem) if you minimize you wait as it slowly peels away, hit apply such as on display changes you wait i am really not used to navigating xp any ideas maybe disable animation if someone knows how or any ideas would be helpful

it is great to be back on the board yall are the best

I'm not sure why your system is so slow, but if you think your animations settings could be part of the problem, there is a way to turn them off. Do you have TweakUI? If you do, open it and click on the General tab. You'll find several animations settings there to uncheck.

Get back to us and let us know what works and what doesn't. Good luck.

This machine should be lightning fast compared with 98 on a 200MHz CPU. I assume you have more than 128MHz of RAM? XP should NOT be sold with 128MHz of RAM, but it IS!. 256MHz is a usefull minimum. But even with 128 it won't be as slow as you say. Is the PC under warranty? If it is I would take it back before you do too much as a fix will require a bit if trial and error and ultimately maybe a reinstall.

If the screen redraw is slow then it possibly points to a video card/driver problem, but other driver/application or even hardware problems will cause this as well.

Look in the Processes tab in Task Manager and see what process (if any) is hogging all the resources. Note; System Idle Process should normally be floating around 98-99% CPU usage indicating normal operation when the system is idle after a process has been done and no App is working much in the background.

    Hi,

Doesn't surprise me.... according to MS, a 233MHz Pentium is the minimum, and we all know that what MS calls minimum will barely work in practice!

    more info

i have 128mb of ddr, and when looking at task manager shows 19 processes and cpu usage around 10% or less iexplorer and taskmgr biggest user svchost in there 4 times for next level of uses and spoosv after that.
i do not have tweakui not sure how to get it with xp i know it was on the win 98 cd but this has a bootable 2 disc set of restore cds.
rechecked my video card all operating normally no updated drivers
i don't think it is so bad i need to turn it in for warrenty just seems to be slower than my expectations.

    Hi,

    Download TweakuiXP from here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

And try this - adjust settings for best performance :

Right Clck My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Performance Settings > Visual Effects and hit 'Adjust for Best Performance'

and on the Advanced tab check that Programs are set under Processor Scheduling and Memory Usage.

This is a good starting point - and try a simple screensaver - not 3D.

Also turn off all the services that XP has running by default. Go to Black Viper's site for a list of those services and recommendations about the settings for each.

It's a little tedious but you'll see a definite improvement in performance.

You might also have some, or a lot, of spyware running. Download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or AdAware (I use them both.) Let them clean up any spyware they find.

A couple of things to do that may improve the speed. Regularly delete IE Temp internet files, cookies and history. Delete Temp files from your user profile from time to time C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp. Use the disk defragmenter on a regular basis. Go to windows update and install most of the updates. Some you won't need if you don't run the service (an example may be the .NET updates?).
Download and run a couple of registry cleaners from time to time.
Two I recommend are; The beta version of EasyCleaner 2.0
    http://www.toniarts.com/betas.htm
I don't normally recommend betas, but this has better support for XP than the older v1.7f

and... The registry cleaner component of jv16 PowerTools v1.3.
    http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/software.shtml

Used together these should make improvements.

    what did i do

i installed tweakui and it didn't help that much but right click on my computer/advanced settings but instead of best performance i used custom so i could keep certain settings but i was able to stop all animation and it seems to be a lot faster now.

    Yes,
that's the first thing I do after a reformat/install is turn off all the glitter and fades, but I still keep the XP look without making it look boring like 95.
Do yourself (and XP) a favour and get at least another 128MB of RAM. You WILL notice an improvement.
