    Hi All,

Some of the kinder web sites are notifying that popup killers should be turned off to see their page. Also, Netscape allows several degrees of control through its Popup Window Control preferences. However some web sites will appear incomplete or blank if the popup killer is on. Has anyone been clever enough to develop a Hotkey that turns off the popup killer when it is required to view a site?

I'm using Windows 98se and NS7.01 compact and when it's required to turn off the popup killer must enter Netscape or go to Internet Explorer. Is the Hotkey method doable?

    Hi derfsch,

To the best of my knowledge there is no hot key, therefore not doable. However, here is a list of the Mozilla Keyboard Shortcuts, for future reference. Netscape shortcuts are listed in the Help section of the Browser. The Mozilla shortcuts will work with Netscape also.

You might like the XULPlanet Preferences Toolbar, which is basically a toggle on and off for popup control. More information on the Toolbar:

    XUL Planet Preferences Toolbar 2
    Using the PrefBar

    Popups
    Type: Checkbox
    Default Status: Hidden

Toggles the "Open unrequested windows" pref. I have heard that there are still some popups that can get through this, but I don't know any details. This was called "onLoad Popups" in the original PrefBar (version 1.x).

    OR

Here are options for setting both global and zone policies for popups:

    Global and Zone Policies
The default policy is special; it applies to all sites. You can also set policies that apply to specific sites or groups of sites, overriding the default.

    Ramona,

As usual your reply was detailed enough to provide the proper direction. Thank you. I have installed the XUL Planet PrefBar and had only a quick look at it. I'm off for some family reunion over Easter. When I return next week I'll be able to give a more complete reply.

I am not very familiar with Netscape 7.01, does it not have a white list for automatic pop-up override?

I know that the later Mozillas will allow you to set it so that specific sites/domains can open pop-ups automatically, while stopping pop-ups on the rest of the sites.

I have mine to allow pop-ups at dsgroupholland.com and at tvguide.com automatically.

Netscape 7.02 might have this incorporated since it was on a later build of Mozilla. Then again, it has been my experience that Netscape sometimes disables some of the best features of Mozilla when they build thier versions.

If you really don't need or use Netscape mail, then you might want to consider using Mozilla 1.4a or 1.3. (1.4a is a semi test build, but I have not found any major bugs in it and only one minor one (very minor and it deals with the coding on that website) and I use it constantly both at home and work).

Plus it has some very nice themes and a lot of extensions to enhance your browsing. I am partial to the tabbed browsing extension for it.

    Ramona and Brooks,

Thank you for your responses. I have been away from my computer, hence the delay in getting back to you.
Ramona: ......... As indicated earlier, I installed the XUL Planet PrefBar and added the Popups button. It is my impression that checking or unchecking this button has no effect on the popups. The Mozilla Keyboard Shortcuts contained nothing useful for controlling popups. What I would like to have is a toggle like the F11 key which controls screen size immediately or the PrefBar F8 key which turns the PrefBar toolbar on and off.

Brooks: ............ I'm not sure what a "white list" is but it could be that which allows or blocks certain web sites as part of setting up Netscape. Going from Edit, Preferences, Privacy and Security,to Popup Window Controls brings you to the screen which Allows or Suppresses popups and has an Exception button for each choice. I have added my bank's URL here because I could only go so far in their screens until the popup for that site was removed.

Again, Thank you both for your interest. I'm willing to let this thread rest. Maybe in later versions of NS such a HotKey will be available.

    You are welcome.

A white list allows certain actions to happen, in this case to allow a site to open a pop-up, where as a blacklist prevents a certain action from happening, such as some anti-spam programs use to prevent spam.
