I have a user who is experiencing a couple of annoying items when using the e-mail function in Outlook 2002 running in XP Home, SP1.

    1. The autofill feature, when creating an e-mail, autofill sometimes pulls in the correct e-mail contact information, sometimes it doesn't. The user will key in David, and autofill displays Pam. If I understood where it pulls the information from, it might help. Is there some kind of index I need to rebuild ?

    2. Contact/Address Book. Some contacts are listed twice. So, I delete a duplicate contact record. If I modify the remaining contact record, e.g. add a fax number to the contacts detail, I get a duplicate record.

Can anybody point me to a solution ?

Did you run Detect and Repair in Outlook(under Help dropdown)?

    Possibly. Can't hurt to try.

Can't hurt to try  This is Microsoft Windows I'm talking about. I once lost every e-mail in Outlook Express "trying" something.
    :(

Detect and repair is just that, anyhow I've never had a/heard of a problem with it.

If you are still unhappy, back up your .pst files which contain your data including contacts and emails. That's a good idea anyhow.

Here's how I do it but there's a programme you can download that does it automatically for you at intervals you specify. It's called pfbackup.exe

    xcopy "c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst" d:\outlook

    xcopy "c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Archive.pst" d:\outlook

I ran the "detect and repair" and I see nothing has changed. Duplicate contacts still exist which is a pain in the @ss.
When I delete a duplicate, it's gone no problem. Modify an existing contact, a duplicate appears later. What is up with that ?

I back the e-mails and files up but this will not solve this problem. The file is corrupt or Outlook 2002 is cr@p which is the opinion I am coming to after some spectacular goofs on this applications behaviour.
