When using IE 6, links (or new partial windows (not full page)) will not open. For example, when visiting the Vivisimo search engine site, if I choose "open in new window" option on a search result I get a new transparent IE window with nothing in the address bar and "Done" down below. This also happens in email links. I can start as many new IE's as I want if it doesn't come from a "link ". What simple, stupid thing have I done that I suddenly can't get this to work?

Run the System File Checker. I seem to recall reading that this problem can be caused if the Wininet.dll is corrupt.

I just ran the system file checker and everything checks out OK. Any other attempts at this bugger are welcome. Thanks.

You could try the Repair Tool. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information and then from the Tools menu select Internet Explorer Repair Tool.

I somehow doubt that this will do the trick, but it's nonetheless worth a shot.

See if the suggestions in the following NG post help (found with a groups.google search). Also look at http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers2.htm#hyperlinks

When I did item #4 from Mike Burgess, I got a strange response when I Start - Run regsvr32 Shlwapi.dll. Here is what my machine told me: "Shwapi.dll was loaded but dll registerserver entry point was not found. dll registrerserver may not be exported or a corrupt version of Shlwapi.dll may be in memory. Consider using pview to detect and remove it. "
I don't know what this means or how to correct it. I tried to find pview on my machine, (not there) or on the web (way over my head). I also tried to let IE 6 repair itself, no go. I have removed IE 6 from my machine and gone to my previous ver of IE 5. Still the same problem. Help please!

Try restoring the file oleaut32.dll from your Windows CD.

    Pview is a WinNT/Win2000 utiility.

What Operating System are you running? According to http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/internet_explorer.htm
under "Open in new window doesn't work ", it makes a difference. Also look at the "IE opens blank (empty) windows" link on the same page.
More information here on Regsvr32 Usage and Error Messages http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q249873
The above site mentions the error message you are getting and solutions include trying the regsvr32 command again after a fresh reboot; if no go, extract a fresh copy of the dll(s) in question

The solution is quite simple (and it doesn't require a reinstallation); we just need to re-register the URL monitor. Heck, if you're having any kind of hyperlink hassle, give this a whirl. When software doesn't behave, sometimes you have to spank it. Click on Start | Run and enter: "REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL" (sans quotes). You should then have a dialog tell you that the procedure was completed. Next, fire up Microsoft's Web Browser (IE) and Click Tools | Internet Options | Programs | then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Now, check to see if Web links work like they should in your e-mail client. With any luck, you'll have returned your system to normal.

    Note

Since Open in new window is mentioned, also note that if you have a so called "pop-up stopper" (ie software designed to stop pop-up windows), this can also interfear with the Open in new window.....
