    Hi all,

    Well I was in the proscess of fdisking and formating and all has gone really well up to the point where I am spose to incert my
    Win98SE CD and at the prompt type E:\setup and I get

    Drive E:= Driver MSCD001 UNIT 0

    I am assuming that the driver is missing!!! how and where do I get the driver? and how do install it? My pc automaticlly gave the CD ROM the drive letter of E when I reformatted and thats cool with me but I have never had a problem with the CD ROM till now
    running a disk. I can save this driver to a disk on another cpu and install it on mine right? or is it hidden somewhere on my puter and I just need a command to extract it to where it needs to be?

    hope someone can help

    Thanks,
    Stan (stuck at the prompt LOLOLOLOL!!) :confused:

    1) Power off your computer and insert your boot disk
    2) Turn the computer on and choose to start "With CD-ROM support" when prompted
    3) Watch the screen to see the letter name assigned to your CD-ROM drive. You'll see something to the effect of "Drive D: = Driver MSCD001 unit 0 "
    4) At the command prompt, type in the drive letter above (including the colon symbol), and press [ENTER]
    5) Next, type in "setup ", and press [ENTER]

    The Windows 98 setup program will begin.

    STOP ...... if you follow Daizy's well intentioned instructions, you are back to installing from the CDRom drive. Go back to my instructions and just follow them. And yes , as Daizy said, select enable CDRom support.

    Go back to my short little set of instructions and follow them explicitly.

    From an A: prompt, type
    md C:\Win98
    <enter>
    then type (assuming D is normally your CDROM Drive)
    copy E:\Win98se\*.* C:\Win98 (note-there's a space after 2nd*)
    <enter>
    Once all the files are copied, go to a C: prompt, type
    cd C:\Win98
    <enter>
    then type
    setup
    <enter>

    Copying the Win98SE files to the hard drive, leaving them there, and then running setup from there has a few advantages.
    1. You won't be asked to insert the 98SE CD at a later time, such as adding new hardware, or restoring files. Your system will just go right to them.
    2. Prevents possible problems reading from CD.
    3. You can put the CD away in a safe place, preventing possible damage by having it 'handy'.

    A note about copying the CD files in dos, your Win98SE CD may have the setup cab files located in E:\Win98, instead of E:\Win98SE.
    copy e:\win98\*.* c:\win98

    Good Catch MarkP62. I use a multiboot CD that has 3.11, 95a, 95b, 95c, 98, sp12098 and 98se on it and thats how my folders are currently setup - not necessarily the same nomenclature as a 98se OEM CD.

    Did you select 'with CDROM support' when booting with the floppy?

    Think Markp62 hit it on the head, but if you ever put any of those HDD mfg utilities on your hard drive, that could do it too. Let us know how you make out - I've only done a few hundred of these.

    Congratulations - nobody ever doubted you. Pretty good community effort. Just make sure you load your motherboard/chipset drivers and have fun with the rest of your setup. Hope it turns out the way you want it.

    Thanks Rockster

    RocksterU2,

    Setup went fine after a bunch of trial and error thanks a bunch for help and PATIENCE LOL! I use the SIS chip set and I installed the ultilities program for all the drivers and it went in fast and smooth but I am still experiancing a very small skip in the music on boot up when the desk top comes up. I think it said it was a PCI Audio device. The sis set up disk is for SIS 630/730 2.0 I belive, as I didnt get any paper work on it just what was in the motherboard book. I dont know where to find driver updates for this particular device as I belive the proscesser is getting a tiny strain on boot for some reason. I run a Athlon 1100MGZ pc266 and I belive it is a 810 mother board. If you have any suggestions as to where I might look I would appreciate it.

    Thanks again so much for the help all is running awsome!

    Stan(FireDancer) :cool:

    Rockster This is what I found

    Rockster,

    I found my mother board hand book (lol) I think there should be more but this is what I got with my cpu. It says in the introduction

    This main board has a Socket-462 processor socket for an AMD k7 type cpu

    This main board uses the T-Bird chip set

    This main board supports socket-462 processor front-side bus speeds of 200/266MGz

    Hmm... theres alot of specs in here as to what it will support or do, hope its doing it all any way to find out? The front of the book says and this is the funny part... PC266 system board Socket A
    M810 series... LOL, still didnt give a name for the board. Do I have some generic piece of junk? errrr maybe I shouldnt of asked that im not sure I want to know the answer ROFL!

    Thanks so much

    Stan (FireDancer) :eek:

    Download and install Belarc advisor - it may tell you what MB you have. Then we can look for updated audio drivers - I'm assuming that you have onboard sound. Your MB disk may also list your audio device and there may be a MB manual on that same CD which has considerably more detailed information.

    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

    If that doesn't do it, there are a couple of other programs, Aida 32 and SiSoft Sandra thata will give us more info, but try Belarc first. No rush, get your stuff loaded first, but don't disregard this indefinately either.

    Aida here, if/when you need it.
    When all this is done, if you have any more problems, you will definitely know what to look for, as you've learned alot.
