Ok as noone else seems to have any ideas, I guess it is time to do the removal proceedure that I reccomended. The one that required removing the sound card.

So lets do that. But I will add even one more thing to do as you get ready. Look in add/remove and uninstall anything to do with this driver.

Remember there are two messages that deal with this.

    Ronnie ~

    Please check this:
    • 'Control Panel' > 'Sounds, Speech & Audio Devices' > 'Sounds and Audio Devices'
    • 'Volume' tab > first 'Advanced' button
    • In 'Master Volume', 'Options' > 'Properties'
    • Check 'Wave' & 'SW Synth' > 'OK'
    • Make sure the mute of each is unchecked in 'Master Volume'

    ok update time lol!

I checked all the things U mentioned BruceKrymow and they were all as needed to be.

I uninstalled all sound software (went overboard lol!) as well as the creative card software (including registry) and physically removed it as well (as mflynn suggested).

I checked the system and creative, vibra and indead anything to do with sound (other than windows original componants) were gone!

I then began the installation process again...

The card is fine...it was recognised by windows, and the right driver was installed by me. All direct x tests show the card working...I can hear the sounds too. I have not installed any other software yet..so as to prove that a third party program is not what has caused and is causing this problem.

Only thing I am left to think of is that a componant of windows has gone south! Sfc didnt fix it...windows thinks windows is ok...i must be imagining it!

I am just about ready for the "hari-kiri" I mentioned earlier lol..a complete format and reinstall...unless I can get some ideas from any thoughtfull kind sole out there who has an inkeling of what to do to fix this problem!

    I am done lol..

Awaiting a miricle and backing up data needed for later...so time is ticking!

Hope there is a saviour amoung U!

    Thanking U all again

    Just a thought.

Did you let Windows install its default drivers to begin with ?

I have had both Audio and Video problems by not doing that.

And I have one of the simplest Audio cards. The old always faithfull SB16. But I still needed to let Windows handle it at first.

Then run a day or two before upgrading drivers.

OK I am out of ideas.

Sorry late getting back long, long hard intense day at work yesterday!

But consider that the way this happend that a circut on the sound card could have gone south.

If you have the resources before you just format and reinstall you could try something like the following.

Use Partition Magic grow a new partition if you do not already have one to use.

Then use Drive image to make an image of this drive on that partition so you can easily and quicky restore.

Then format and reinstall a basic copy to see if this will correct the problem. If it don't then then card has a bad circut. Then just restore the image and get a new sound card.

    Solution?

    Just an update..

After waiting as long as I possibly could, and much aggrivation, I did the "hari-kiri ". I fdisked, formated and reinstalled everything..and all is fine now. The 98 system that was installed in another partition was still working fine (sound events) before i did the fdisk..so it looks like part of the xp system went south..for some reason..and sfc did not find it!

Would have liked the solution so I would have known what to do to fix it should I ever come across this phenomenon again..but I guess we never did find it!

The only strange thing was that when in 98 and I tried to format a partition, it claimed that the boot sector of that partition was faulty and the disk was unusable....The partition with xp did format fine! After fdisk, there were no errors and the hard disk is fine, and the system runs as should be! I have no clue if this should have any baring on the problem i had!

Thanks for evryone's time and patience! It looks like for now, for lack of any other solution, reinstalation is the solution!

Win98 cannot format an NTFS partition.
