    Hi all,

When I boot up my cpu and it gets to the desk top and you hear the windows boot music (and what a tune it is I might add) my tool bar comes up and my icons but it sounds like a single skip in a cd and then finishes. Anyone got any idea what might be causing this as it is very irritating, and how I might go about fixing it if at all. Thanks for the help.

Yep I know what it is.

It is that at that moment the processor is so busy and the disk is too that it cannot give the sound enough attention.

To correct it you need to look closely at your startup programs.

Here are 2 tiny programs to help.

    Startup control
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

This gives simple and full control of what starts at boot up.

After install there will be a Startup icon in control panel.

Why this over Msconfig? Msconfig only allows unchecking and or disabling of items. Startup Control panel allows deleting items or moving from startup to run as a service etc.

    Startup List
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/startuplist.zip
StartupList does nothing but grab all Autoload (startups) and puts them in a Wordpad file so that you can then copy it and paste it back to us in a message so that we can advise on a problem here.

So why don't you do that!

Just copy it to the windows\system folder.

    And run the install again!

This is the way you learn.

These two things cannot hurt you system.

Buddy you are in good shape! I am surprised!

It is as clean as it should be.

But to use the startup control panel when you do use it. All you do is uncheck something to stop it or check it to allow it. Or delete to remove. Simple!

Since you are this clean in startups and have done the oter cleans I posted earlier I would leave it alone, it only lasts a few seconds.

    Okie Dokie!!!

    Mike,

Thanks for your patience and understanding as I am still trying to learn. I wamt to learn about the registry and how it works but I find it difficult as I am not familiar with all the language or files and what they actually do.

I will tell you this,,, about 4 days ago my computer was acting really funny and what you see on that list is how it always has been because I use it more for surfing and 1 game but at any rate
I decided that I was gonna clean the HDD and re install win98se.

The disk I have is a copy but is a full copy on cd rom and the steps I used to do this was as follows:

    1) went to bios set up and changed to boot to CD-ROM
    2) I rebooted and hit F8 to get to command prompt
    3) at prompt I typed FORMAT C:
    4) Once CPU was done I inserted 98SE disk and rebooted
    and installed per the instructions.
    5) Set up hardware useing SiS utilities program that my motherboard needs (at one point it asked me to write in the correct path for the OS I typed in D:\WIN98 but it said it was incorrect path. so I told it to cancel.
    6) I ran a scan disc (thourogh) and installed my software. did a defrag. And this is where im at today.

Did I do this all wrong? (probably) LOL if I did can I try again? or should I leave it alone? Do you have any suggestions?

At best or even worst I will destroy the puter I saved so long to have!!! ha ha ha but I will learn!! One way or another I am determined to learn hoe these **** things work and what it all means!!!

Thanks so much for your help Mike.. and your patience

    Stan (FireDancer)

No wonder it is so clean. You haven't had much time to muck it up.

Had I known this earlier you would not have had to do all these steps.

Now I reccomend that you search the www for the very latest driver for both your sound card and motherboard chipset. This will probably finish off your problem.

To find these go to the mfg sites.
