been having similar problems to original poster in earlier thread, see below.

I followed all the instructions given and the following event viewer application log was created

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: EventSystem
    Event Category: Event Service
    Event ID: 4106
    Date: 19/04/2003
    Time: 22:29:40
    User: N/A
    Computer: SEANY202
    Description:
The COM+ Event System detected a corrupt IEventSubscription object. The COM+ Event System has removed object ID {EABC86EC-65A7-410B-A468-A040BDEB74F9}. The subscriber will no longer be notified when the event occurs.

BEFORE I CLEARED ALL PREVIOUS LOGS, THERE WERE A FEW OF THESE

I am a user with admin rights on a pc with two different users (my wife and I) as well as administrator.

The lock ups usually occur whilst browsing the hard drive, the web, or playing some games (medal of honour particularly)

(sometimes i get application lock ups which I can get out of with task manager - but when I try to end program, I get a message saying it is being debugged - possibly connected?)

    Any help please!

    Do you use Spy/Aware cleaners?

Have you (deeply) cleaned tif's and temps lately?

Do this also then, cleans temps.

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

Do you update SpyBot each time before you scan and have you run the Immunize function?

Thanks for the quick responses :)

Spybot - fully immunized and bang upto date.

I have always had problems running the built in Windows clean up utility - it always froze when scanning.

It ran OK this time and then the Quickclean utility took over to actually remove the files

    HOWEVER, when it finished doing what it was doing I got this;

    qclean.exe - Application Error

X The instruction at "0x77fcb7b0" referenced memory at "0x024e2eec ". The memory could not be "written ".

click on OK to terminate the program

Ran it again, no error :)

    Ok next step!

We will try to use qclean as a gage!

Download and run XpAntiSpy. Written for XP but works for 2K.

    http://www.webattack.com/get/xpantispy.shtml

It has help on each item and usually its recomendations are sound.

There is one that may apply here. Have it clear the Pagefile on shutdown.

After the first reboot after you run XPAntiSpy go back to XpAntiSpy and uncheck the clear Pagefile at shutdown, as we only want to clear it once.

These are also worth doing if you want. These are things you should already have and do.

    Registry and System cleaners

    RegCleaner

    http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

Look in first 2 cols for programs you thought you uninstalled or removed, these are the dregs left by an uninstaller.

Also tag and remove any that you are "POSITIVE" are not supposed to be on your computer. Any doubt leave them.

After removing these go to the top Tools-Registry Cleanup-Do them all. Delete all it finds.

    EasyClean1.7 http://gswi.com/downloads.htm

Run only unnecessary files and registry clean delete all it finds. If you have ME or XP in the "Unnessesary Files" type the word HELP in the skip box. Do not do Duplicate files!

    RegScrubXP http://home.carolina.rr.com/lexunfreeware/RegScrubXP/RegScrubXP.htm
    NOTE: W2K and XP only!

Select RegScrub finds problems and remove all it finds.

I recomend you d/l these and install but do not run except XpAnti Spy.

Then shut down to safe mode and run them in this order.

    1. XpAntiSpy turn the pagefile back on
    2. easycleaner
    3. regcleaner
    4. RegScrub

    Then empty the recycle bin

    Then run the cleanmgr again.

    Shutdown reboot!

XP Antispy - once the settings are set, do you minimize or exit the program?

Should notice better performance all around.

Use these steps to clean up every few weeks!

    Repair of IE?

2 more steps to do if you have more.

    Command prompt

    type
    chkdsk /r

it will want to do this on next boot, let it

    after reboot

repair the OS by putting the OS cd in the cd
    command prompt

    type
    sfc /scannow

    Hi again Mike

Unplugged PC over night (means my broadband IP will change when modem reboots).

PC is a **** sight faster, that's for sure.

Had two lock ups between midday and 7pm today.

Decided to look through windows XP forum (both NTFS systems) for further info.

Someone was having a similar problem to me. You replied, being the fabulously charitable chap you are and took her (IIRC) through similar stages as myself.

    Then Barbara-Ann chipped in with this;

    Hi Mo,
I also had the "slow as molasses" syndrome after installing Windows Update Patch Q811493.

After reading the following article http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=9034 from the Inquirer I uninstalled the patch and my computer is as fast as ever.

From the article ....WINDOWS UPDATE USERS and prudent sys admins might have installed the latest Windows patch without a thought. That might not have been such a good idea. The patch is meant to fix a hole in Windows Messaging but can end up causing a severe performance degradation.
The patch, which we wrote about here, has been causing grief for many users. If you have Windows Update running on automatic and you're experiencing a nasty slowdown on your system, you might want to try removing patch 811493. Users with the performance problems report that removing the patch fixes things.

The patch fixes a relatively minor security problem where an attacker would have to have physical access to the machine.

Seems to have done the biz :)

This web site is ace for help - told all my friends already.

THANKYOU FOR EVERYONES HELP (esp. Mike - insomniac pc guru :p )

    See you around

    Seany

    Good news Sean!

Well I am not so much an insomniac and definately not a guru!

Main reason I have been on so much this weekend is, although I am in excellent health I have a tendency to have Gout (believe me you don't want any). So my right foot is now laying on a pillow on table beside me to keep it raised. This was about all I could do or felt like doing this weekend!

I'll make up for it next weekend.

    Mike
