Device Manager says there are problems with my CD-ROM and DVD-ROM and When I attempt to uninstall and reinstall them I get the following message: "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information(in the registry) is incolmplete or damaged (Code 19) ". I am running XP on a HP Pavilion 554. This started after I attempted to install Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum(Roxio), then uninstalled said application after being unable to install compatibility patches. Help I no longer have access to these devices. Thanks!

Try Uninstalling the CD/DVD after booting to safe mode. If successful, reboot and let XP detect and install the CD drive. With Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum, download the 5.3.4.21 update from the roxio site, install the original 5.x version but use the custom install and deselect the Take Two application as it is incompatible and will crash XP. Then install the latest 5.3.4.21 update. A suggested way to upgrade is do not reboot the PC after installing the 5.x minus the Take Two and install the update before rebooting.

Befor all this you may want to run a couple of Registry cleaners over the system to clean out any dead/corrupted entries.

The beta version of v2.0 is better for XP than the old v1.7f

Click on Registry Tool and run Registry CLeaner from the Tools menu. Carefull with some of the other utilities... Powerful but dangerous!

    Woops!
Install jv16 Power Tools 1.3 as it has a newer registry cleaner than the RegCleaner programme from the same site.

YES this is newest and most powerful!

But be careful with JV6 because it is not as simple to operate as RegCleaner was more orented to very experienced users. It asks more questions that had better be answered correctly.

I use JV but I have been doing this 25 years and do it professionally. I reccomend RegCleaner for most normal users. That is the reason he still offers RegCleaner. And you will notice the extra warning for jv.

    Execellent suggestions by Paul.

I would enhance his advice by these steps.

D/L RegCleaner and Easyclean 1st but don't run.

Boot to safe mode to remove all the cd/dvd items in Add/Remove because they are damaged and need be reinstalled cleanly. If it requires a reboot then reboot again to safe mode.

After add/remove browse to c:\Program Files and look for any folders left from the uninstall. Remove the folders.

    Then run EasyClean then RegCleaner.

Then RegCleaner on the first page look in the first 2 columns for any entrys for these programs and remove them. Then go to top Tools-registry Cleanup-Do them all. And yes it is OK to remove all of these that it finds.

Finally reboot and reinstall what you want.
