Hi. About once a week I check my computer by using www.pcpitstop.com . Recently it tells me to defragment my system. I find this odd as I had defragmented it a few days previous. Could anyone please enlighten me.
    Regards, William.

    What defragmenter did you use?

It is not unusual for different methods of measuring fragmentation to yield different results. There is no standard measure of the degree of fragmentation.

In some cases, the differences can be extreme when 2 defragmenters are compared. Some defragmenters speed file loading by distributing files on the drive to allow the fastest access. In effect, these programs actually cause more file fragments rather then fewer, but they do this deliberately in an effort to maximize the efficiency of head movement.

When one of these programs reports 0% fragmentation, another would see the drive as highly fragmented simply due to different criteria for measurement.

The moral is to pick a decent defrag program and stick with it. Using more than one just leads to conflicting ideas of how best to do the job and how well it was done.

If your defragger says your drive is fine, then it is.

Hi.Abraxas, Many thanks for your reply. I used the defrag. facility contained within Windows 98 SE. Regards, William.

That defragmenter is as good as any.

If I remember correctly, it uses an optimized file-placement scheme that may "appear " to other defragmenters to show a high degree of fragmentation.

    You should be fine.
