I was trying to do the IE SP1 upgrade when it bombed trying to update Outlook Express and now I can no longer run it (can't find it, msimn.exe no longer exists). How can I reinstall OE (or perhaps all IE?) so that I can attempt applying the patch again?

You used to be able to repair IE in the System Information menu option under Accessories but that doesn't exist under win2000.

Also, there are NO entries for IE or OE in Add/Remove programs. Can I, and if so how, reinstall IE/OE from the original win2000 CD?

    Hi, Mike ~

    How did it 'bomb'?

You could try installing from your CD by Add/Remove > Windows Components, but you may encounter difficulties if your system recognizes in part the newer version.

I suggest you simply follow the directions and download from the direct Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 page.

The IE6 SP1 upgrade stopped when trying to update Outlook Express with this error:

    *****
    Digital Signature not found
The sw you are about to install does not contain an MS signature. There is no guarantee it will work correctly with windows:
    Microsoft Outlook Express 5
    *****

Then when I clicked OK it stopped the upgrade. Why could it not upgrade the Outlook Express that came with the cd along with IE5? It's part of the same package?

Er... I DID download the 'Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1', that's what I was running when it bombed with the error. That's what stopped when trying to update the Outlook Express portion.

I'm trying to run it again, but since outlook express is gone I expect it will give me the same or another error. That's why I want to reiinstall version 5 to see if the service pack will work (perhaps something was corrupt before?)

Did you try registering OE? Try this Start _Run-type in

    "C\Program Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE /REG "

    note the quotes are required.

I did it directly from that link/page (found it doing a search on their site). If I tried to rerun it, it would give me the 'digital signature' error for OE, then after a reboot OE was simply gone (EXE no longer on PC).

I'm pursuing another suggestion on how to reinstall the original IE/OE, will post it if it works.

Well, I tried rerunning the IE6 SP1 but it still stops saying that OE had a signature problem. I also started having other crashes (can't even open my Network options in Control Panel without win2000 crashing to a blue screen now).

I also downloaded and ran a hardware diagnostic on my hard drives using Maxtor/Quantum's Powermax utility. It said that the hard drivers are physically ok, so it looks like win2000 is simply messed up.

SO, I looks like I have to format and reinstall it now (can't just install over the previous copy as it doesn't allow that).

    NOW, my main question is:
-I have win98 installed on my G: drive (the first partition of my second hard drive, i.e. I have two hard disks). If I reformat the C: partition (1st partition on the first hard drive, includes boot sector) WILL I now have to reinstall windows98 again too OR is can I run a command or utility after to get the win98 boot back? Right now I can choose between win2000 and win98 in the startup menu that win2000 provides a boot time, but I'm afraid that if I
reinstall win2000 it may no longer recognize that win98 is installed on the
    second hard drive?

    thx.

Mike, if you haven't re-installed Win2X yet, try the repair tool for IE. I know you said it wasn't listed, but here is how to find it. Also, if you are able to bring it up it will give you the option of repairing or installing a component. If you have the disc, you might then be able to install OE.

If the Internet Explorer Repair Tool Verification does not work, or if Internet Explorer 5 is not listed in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, you can start the Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. For Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and earlier, in the Open box, type the following command (the command is case sensitive), and then click OK:
    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt "

For Internet Explorer 6, please use the following command:
    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt "

    Hi, Jay ~

'Setup\SETUP.EXE' & 'IE Uninstall Log.Txt' for IE6 do not exist.

Well, it sure does on my computer which is Windows 98, and btw. I got that info from a MS KB.

    try copying and pasting

    rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt "

into the Run box and hitting OK.

    Hi, Jay ~

It exists on your Win98 unit because Win98 never shipped w/ IE6.

'Setup\SETUP.EXE' & 'IE Uninstall Log.Txt' for IE6 does not exist in XP.

The ability to repair Internet Explorer does not exist in the version that ships with Windows XP. This feature only becomes available after you upgrade to a newer version of IE. This is normal and has been this way since Win98 and IE4.

The proper method, however, is to enter the following at 'Run...':

    rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

You will need to have your Windows CD available.

No you're right, Win2k had IE5 (and that's what I'm using). In any event, the repair bombed saying it couldn't so the repair because there were old DLLs.

I DID find out how to reinstall OE though:

To reinstall Outlook Express in Windows 2000:
    Quit Outlook Express.
Using Windows Explorer, open the %SystemRoot%\Inf folder. (By default, this is the Winnt\Inf folder.)
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders. Click to clear the Hide file extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.
Right-click the Msoe50.inf file in Windows Explorer, and then click Install.

So OE5 is back. I tried rerunning the IE6 update but it still wouldn't upgrade OE5 (same signature error). For wahtever reason this IE6 upgrade is more trouble than it is worth. I've reverted back to IE5.OE5 and it works. Enough of this nonsense for me. Upgrades aren't worth the hassle half the time.

    thx for your help/suggestions.

Still bugs me that I can't get OE to upgrade. I've applied ALL the other security updates and even IE *did* update to v6, but Outlook Express is always passed over with the digital signature error. I've uninstalled the IE6 SP1 because now windows always asks me if I want to rerun the upgrade since OE got skipped and that's just TOO annoying. Also, I don't like having only IE upgraded and not OE. Could cause potential problems. Wish I could find out how to fix this so OE would upgrade.
The more detailed error regarding OE is:
"The following file in the software package you want to install is not signed
    msoeres.dll "

If that means anything to anyone let me know.

    thx.
