    Norton Professional Removal
    MY friend has a Dell Latitude--M/M PPO1LL

    Running WIN XP PRO

Somebody installed Norton Professional (I think that was what it was called) and the statement that Noton stuff is so true--this system was taking up 203MB of space.
I removed it through the Add/Remove program in the control panel and also used "Reg Cleaner" to clean-up the left over.

I know of Norton's reputation about not being able or very hard to remove it once it's installed. I had to e-mail Symantec the last time for a procedure to remove an earlier version I had on another computer.

Can anyone tell how I can know for sure I have removed all the Old Norton Professional so I can just install NAV 2003?

recently i went through a very thorough uninstall process on a winxp machine in order to remove Norton SystemWorks (nsw)2002 and get nsw2003 to install properly. and it did, fortunately, on the first shot. i used reg cleaner like you, and i also removed supplemental symantec programs like LiveUpdate and LiveReg that were sitting there in add/remove going "don't forget about me! ". <g>

but the same was not true for the identical procedure on my win2000 machine.

long story short, two things saved me....

    the first was Drive Image.

i created an image before beginning the uninstall/install process, and i had to restore that image three times before i finally got nsw2003 on there properly.

the second thing that saved me was a symantec knowledgebase article that recommended disabling email protection and script blocking before uninstalling. an awful lot of scripts were being written during the install process (or so the progress updates flashing across my screen were telling me), and by failing to disable script blocking on prior uninstall attempts, i think the new program couldn't load properly.

if you have a similar imaging program wherein you can restore your system to its previous state in a matter of a few short minutes, that gives you quite a saftey net for being bold.

i should also add that as strange as it may sound, there have been times (meaning more than once) with symantec program installations where the only way to get things to work was to *not* do everything by the book, as far as preparation is concerned.

forex, with this last successful install of nsw2003 onto win2000, rather than shutting all background applications down (like we all know we are supposed to), i just shut down a memory resident anti-trojan tool and left everything else running. but i didn't try it this way until the fourth and final attempt, which turned out to be the successful attempt.

but again, what really got the program to load, imo, was following the advice of that kb article that said to disable those items before uninstalling.

hopefully some of this rambling will prove helpful in some way to you or to others.

    good luck

    :)

Thanks guys--I guess I lucked out--I used the ADD & Remove programs and deleted every folder I could find, plus the Reg Clean and the new NAV 2003 went on just as advertised--upated all the latest defininitions --did a full computer scan and so far looking good.

    Cleaning Norton

    Hi

The stat. reply from Symantec is - to uninstall & do a clean boot of windows before re-installing - this is the miracle cure for everything to do with NIS / NAV ...... The instructions may leave me not being able to boot at all as they leave virtually nothing running ......

I have had big problems with my DT pc & continual unistalling & re-installing to get things to work ..... not resolved yet. I used liveupdate on my LT - got updates. Went to DT - said I didn't need any

Thus the removal & clean out the reg. Have removed it to get the system corrected before going through the whole lot again....... I never has problems with Norton when using 98se ( NIS 2002 )

Now using XP (HE ) NIS 2003 - problems + I am not the only one. recent updates have caused system slow downs ....... I am also thinking I will need a separate Trojan hunter now as Norton may not be capable of doing all the jobs I thought he was - Including cleaning up behind him ..... lost count of the unistall times.
