Computer name v/s IP Address

    Why is it that when I am logged on to the network at the office through a VPN, I can use START --> RUN --> \\000.000.000.000 to access a server's shares but START --> RUN --> \\COMPUTERNAME doesn't work?

    Sometimes when I use the IP address, I am asked to authenticate, but it won't accept any user name/ password combinations?

    Most likely is that your VPN connection is not defining any name resolution (DNS or WINS) so you can only get to servers via their IP address

    What firewall / VPN are you using and I'll attempt to add the relevant entries for you
