When trying to send or forward mail, I get the message failure report. If I click send/receive half a dozen times, the messages finally get sent. Any ideas why?

    Gunner ~

Please copy, paste and post the error message. It is difficult to ascertain an issue w/o any info.

The error message is below. The recipient is irrelevant.

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was ****@*****.com'. Subject 'test', Account: 'pop.vtown.com.au', Server: 'smtp.vtown.com.au', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 <****@*****.com>: Recipient address rejected: Relay access denied', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

    Hi, Gun ~

This is pretty straightforward w/ the 'Relay access denied' portion. What this means is the mail server is rejecting it to prevent spammers from sending via an open relay.

Try this: Go to Tools > Sends and Receive > Receive all

Once you complete that, then turn around and send. Many SMTP servers are set up to leave a window of time open in which to send once an authorized and valid account address retrieves mail from the POP server.

    Gunner ~

Let me also add that if you have two or more internet service providers installed on your system and are connected through one provider but are trying to send mail using another provider's SMTP server, you will often get that error.

Many providers will not let you use their outgoing mail SMTP server unless you are connected to the internet through them. This is an established anti-spam abuse measure.

I have a Juno account that will not let me send through their server unless I connect online with them or use the Juno GUI. All I did to get around that was enter a different address (that of my regular provider) in the SMTP box in OE, but left the POP3 box to Juno's to retrieve mail.

Rarely, but on occasion, this error can also occur when too many emails are being sent at the same time. Try sending yourself an email and see if you get the same error message.

    Gun ~

    Did you see my addendum?

The error code 'Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC79' points directly to the fact that your provider's SMTP server requires authentication and you haven't set it up or that there has been implementation of software on the mail system to stop non-customers from sending junk mail through the mail system to avoid detection. This junk mail often floods the delivery mail server and forces delays in internal mail delivery. The software prevents all non-customers from sending mail that uses 'smtp.vtown.com.au' as the SMTP server in their email settings. Only when you are being blocked will you receive a 550 or 554 'Relaying Denied' error when you try to send mail.

If you are not using Virtual Communities' services or are not connected online through them, you will not be allowed to send mail via their SMTP servers.

If you have tried w/o luck checking mail first, then sending, then you will have to see if they require authentication another way or you will have to simply enter another server in the email settings account properties.

If you are in fact a legitimate customer of Virtual Communities, you can contact their Customer Service Center.
