In the past week when I save jpeg files I get an automatic file extension of .jpe instead of .jpg which I used to get. Any idea how to restore this back to the original value?

ssglick--.jpe, .jpeg and .jpg files are all versions of JPEG/JIFF Image files and should all open with Internet Explorer by default (or with several other graphic editors if you have made an alternative association). If the .jpe files are opening OK, do you care about the file extension?
    However, see this quote from
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14834&perpage=15&pagenumber=2

"I'm back with what seems to have been the fix.

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\Content Type.

Changed the Content Type from image\jpeg to image\jpg. It seems to be working right now. "
But then later the original problem (RedX) returned.
P.S. I guess I should have asked what method you are using to save these files.

I am saving the image using the right-click menu and choosing Save Picture As. The Save as type: is JPEG (*.jpg) but the File name: has an extension of .jpe. It used to always have a file extension of .jpg until a couple of weeks ago. The only software I loaded since then is ACDSee which of course handles these types of files. So there is likely a connection but I don't know how to put it back the way it was.

The reason it matters is because the window shows all files with the same extension and sometimes I need to see related images.

ssglick--For better or worse, I know nothing about ACDSee.
    However,
    1) In the Save As (or Save Picture) window do you have the option (perhaps in the Save as Type line) to chose "All Files "? That would allow you to see all existing versions of .jpx files.
    2) Windows permits the association of a file with a program to open it. Right click on a .jpg file at the same time you hold down Shift. Click on Open With... . Associate the .jpg file with ACDSee if that is what you want. (Your alternatives are any other graphics editor.) .jpg is usually associated with IE by default. Maybe that association has been lost.
You could also switch to Irfanview as your graphics editor. It is free
    www.irfanview.com
    3) If you paid for ACDSee, there should have some way of getting support.
Hope someone with knowledge of ACDSee will chime in.
    Good luck.

    Solution to this problem

The default file extension for jpeg image files is located in the registry keys:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg

    and

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg

In both cases, there is a key value "Extension" with a data value ".jpg ". In my case, the data value was ".jpe" instead of ".jpg ". When I changed this back to ".jpg" and rebooted my computer, I was able to save image files automatically in IE with a default file extension of .jpg.

Hope this helps others with similar problems or at least leads them in the right direction.:)
