    Hello All,

I have had some really down days with my cpu lately and am wondering if I can just wipe the HDD clean and reinstall windows98SE and start over again? There is nothing on the cpu I am worried about loosing as I have backed up and copied files that I want to save. What whould be the best way to do this and please correct me if I am wrong here but isnt the command to reformat FORMAT C: and after that is done running just reinstall win98SE and after that procsess install my software/hardware?
Or is it more intailed as far as commands to re format?

    Thanks

    Get a Win98 startup diskette.
    Boot to it.
    At the A:\ prompt, type: format c: {enter}
    Wait...
Give the drive a label when prompted.
Change boot sequence to CD-ROM first in BIOS.
    Insert the Win98 CD.
    Restart the computer.

If I read correctly 98SE is mentioned.

That will depend on which 98SE CD you have whether it works or not.

The Full is bootable. The upgrade is not.

Also we need to be sure which SE CD the user has.

    Full, UPGRADE or UPDATE

The full or UPGRADE are OK. They will go in clean or overtop.

But the UPDATE needs 98 FE to be installed first.

    Thanks All

Thank you all for the replys I wiped the HDD and re installed Win98SE everything is up and running now, but I am still a bit sceptical of the install of the SIS program that is needed for my motherboard support not sure it went in right. It asked my to
direct the the drive for the windows os when I tried everything I put in was inacceptible so I told it to ignore and the program continued on and finished. Is there anyway to verify that I got it all in right?

If you installed from the CD then you will need to point it to

[CDROM letter]:\Win98. That is where the OS files are.

    For example D:\WIN98

You can look in the device manager to see what letter the CDROM has been asigned.

I myself never boot to or install from the CD. I copy the contents of the Win98 folder on the CD to a folder on the HD ( and to a partition other then C: ) Boot to the Startup disk and install from the folder on the HD. It makes life a lot easier for Windows.

I read that as saying that you did boot to the CDROM and just run setup.

If that is the case the system will not find the required files.

If you had booted to the SUD and ran setup from the Win98 folder on the CD Windows would know where to find the files. ( as long as the CD was inserted )

That is another reason for not booting to or just running setup from the CD without changing to the Win98 folder.

That is another good reason for putting the Setup files on the HD. The CD is then not needed.
