Did you check to see if you have a hosts file? If you didn't have one in the location I mentioned I'd do a search to see if you have one elsewhere.

    Zander,

I can't believe it was something that simple. So far all the sites I was having trouble with before are working fine now, especially mine. :D

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but now my outlook express won't connect.

Edit: I think the e-mail problem with my host.

Anyway, do I need to do anything about NewDotNet?

    Good diag Zander

SVTBlackLight01 if you ran the new SpyBot and Adaware they will cleanup any residues NewDotNet. Your Winsock was corrected when you did the reload you mentioned!

Yeah thanks for the help everybody. I have been trying to fix this problem for months and haven't found anyone that could help me out until now.

Lonnie I almost forgot to answer your question about DHCP.

    Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.

When setting up a network connection to another PC or Broadband with or without Router etc DHCP will find a DHCP server which can be a computer or a router that is configed to serve out IP addresses.

So the pc that uses the DHCP retrieves its IP from the DHCP server instead of you having to specify it when you set up the network connection.

A DHCP IP can change from time to time so you can not allways expect to connect to 192.168.1.20. And if you do it may not be the original.

But you could connect to \\lonniesComputer no matter what the IP.

So in a DHCP environment you would setup connections to the Computer name and never the IP.

Now static IP is the reverse, when you set up the connection you say this will be 192.168.1.20, then you can connect either way name or IP.

Seems like DHCP is a waste of time and you have to be careful to use the computername when with static you could use either.

Well it is for just a few computers.

Where it comes in handy is when you have say 500 compters on the network. If you use DHCP it finds a free IP for you.

If you need static IP in this situation you need to see this busy man called the network administrator who has a list and will give you the number when he has time to be bothered. Smile!

If you pick one without seeing him and it causes an IP conflict then he comes growling and scratching with fire in his eyes.

Both have their support advantages. DHCP noone has to keep up and setup is quick.

But static is faster (if you count milliseconds). There are many advantages and disadvantages to both! Depends on the many factors.

This leads to my reference to DHCP in this thread. DHCP is/tries to be a little smarter so it has a cache of visited sites similar to TIFs and sometimes it gets bad DNS addresss and keeps them. Then no connectee to sitee!

Hence the ipconfig /flushdns, this clears them out and clears the slate. There is a renewdns and a displaydns and other commands also.

Additionally you can have both on a network the DHCP server can be told to dish out ips in a set range. If you set an IP manually outside this range no problem.

Glad to see you got it fixed. Whenever I see a problem of this sort I always go to the hosts file first. Quite often it's the cause of the problem and it's one of the easiest things there is to check. I've always been the sort that likes to take the easy way out if possible :) . Don't see any reason to change for a computer. :D

Now about all the other suggetions. Should I still install and run SbyBot and AdAware? And do I need to do something about the NewDot folder being missing?

Not only should you do it now but do it regulaly as you should have been doing all along.

Make it a part of a bi-weekly maintenance schedule.

Sorry late getting back had long, long intense day at work.
