I use NERO 5.81 to burn CDs and an AOPEN burner. Nero reports some of the discs as 'illegal mode' or 'could not perform fixation'. What do these mean?

Can anyone show me how to override NERO so that it will skip the bad sectors of the discs and burn on the remaining good tracks?

    Hi, Can ~

What version do you have? The latest is 5.5.10.20.

Are you getting a message that says 'illegal mode' when you are burning?

When you refer to 'bad sectors', are you referring to a CD that you are ripping and scanning for errors? Or are you referring to a CD you are currently burning? Are you burning from ISO? Are these data, audio, or hybrid CDs you are trying to burn?

CD BURN problem. A reply to Mr. Bruce

    Dear Mr. Bruce,

I am so happy to get a response from you.

    a. Nero version is 5.5.10.0 OEM. AOPEN burner with Justlink enabled.

Are you getting a message that says 'illegal mode' when you are burning?

    b. Yes. And then it stops. There is also a "couldn't perform fixation" message.

When you refer to 'bad sectors', are you referring to a CD that you are ripping and scanning for errors?

    c. No. I mean sectors that can no longer be burned by NERO. It is so ironic that the rest of the CD is longer usable.

Or are you referring to a CD you are currently burning?

    d. Yes.

    Are you burning from ISO?
Are these data, audio, or hybrid CDs you are trying to burn?

    e. I am burning data only from the harddisk to CD.

I hope I have answered your questions accurately. Thank you again.

    Hi, Can ~

What is 'Justlink'? That may figure in.

As far as the 'fixation' is goes, there could be many reasons:
    • You need to burn in the Disc-At-Once mode
    • You haven't disabled the 'Auto insert notification' or enabled 'DMA' (depends on OS)
    • You burned a portion of a file outside the allowable area
    • You may need to deactivate the energy saving mode
    • Or one of these many items
Now, as far as the 'illegal mode' is concerned, there are only a few things that can cause that. One biggie is if you have or had other CD writing software installed. The other is simply the executable is failing along the course of actions somewhere which will probably require you to download and install the newest Nero 5.5.10.20 version.

Normally, you can just paint over the old version, but in this case you must uninstall the old first. Make sure you copy down your license from 'Help' > 'About Nero'.
