    here are my computer specs..
    Gigabyte 7AVX 8x agp motherboard
    nvidea 32mb agp
    768mb ddr266 ram
    tdk velocd 48x
    16x dvd rom
    80gig 8m cache prim
    40 gig secondary
    10/100 nic
    intel 56k modem
    sb live audigy plat 2
windows xp pro sp1 and ALL updates as of NOW

ok.. i just built this last night.. put 8 gigs worth of stuff on it..
everything works PERFECTLY.. burnt a cd, played a dvd, etc etc etc..
i tweaked the services by using this website
    http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
    using the "safe" column..
after finishing everything and getting it the way i like it.. i usually use a techtv tip to hack explorer.exe so i can change the word "start" into what i want.. that requires going into safe mode to do it.. i cant get into safe mode.. it just hangs..but the computer works perfectly.. of those services..did i inadvertanely turn something off or put something to manual that i wasnt supposed to?
i mean the computer works GREAT..but..if i MUST get into safe mode for something i just cant..

    2nd issue..
in the c:/documents and settings.. you have your users, admin, and all users..
i have all users, my username, and administrator..but i also have this...
    Administrator.MYSTUFF-0NP0xx
    and i have this too....
    Administrator.MYSTUFF-0NP0BP.xxx

i dont remember ever seeing all this before.. so this is what i have..

    administrator
    Administrator.MYSTUFF-0NP0BP.0xx
    Administrator.MYSTUFF-0NP0xx
    all users
    myusername

***ive installed xp bout 20x.. NEVER seen the above entries in documents and settings before..

could this have something to do with my not being able to get into safe mode?
or is there something, like i described above that i missed?
    any help would be appreciated..
like i said the computer works great..just wanna be able to get into safe mode if i ever needed to..
    thanks

This may be too elementary to mention, but since you didn't say anything about it I'll give it a try:

Reboot, hold down F8 key. All thing's being right, you should be able to select Safe Mode.

Are you sure it is actually seized? When you are booting into safe mode it is loading only minimum drivers...sometimes it takes awhile and only appears to be seized.

What are the last two drivers listed on the monitor when you believe to be at that point?

If you get past the Mup.Sys driver, you ususally won't get a hang w/o some error notice.

thats the last file i see

mup.sys, is the last one i see before it hangs...
but thats when i choose "safe mode command prompt "
when i choose safe mode, or safe mode w/networking
the white line goes across and freezes..
or stalls.. what ever you wanna call it..
    im just perplexed..
any other info/suggeestions would be most useful
    thanks

    Hi, Skip ~

'Mup.Sys' is the last driver loaded before the GUI appears. Did the 'mup.sys' problem happen after you applied SP1?

This issue seems to revolve frequently around new hardware installs & custom-built rigs. If you have recently updated to SP-1, this fix seems to have worked for a few people in your shoes: Uninstall Security Update Q311967. This update appears to have replaced the mup.sys. If you have some restore points - you could try a system restore.

Do you have a USB 2.0 card? You may need to disable it in the BIOS.

All that had this issue had built their own rigs. 2 had resolved it by swapping their mobos when the previous items didn't apply or work.

Beyond this, I am not much of a hardware man.

If it is not there, then you don't have it.

    Skipper ~

If you don't have it on your system then it does not apply. We should look at some of the other things now.
