    Hi SVTBlackLight01

Just so we understand correctly answer couple questions
    ,please.

I think you're saying I type www.whateverwebsite.com in the address bar and it wont work, right ?

Version of OS and IE ?
On Ie's toolbar help about version ?, cypher strength ?
    and update version Q numbers?

Tools internet options advanced (when searching from the address bar) area I have checked just go to the most likely site.

Is you'rs set this way if not try it--did it work ?
May have to close all IE's for settings to stick.

Do you have SpyBot and or adaware yet
To prevent most spyware adbots trojans and all sorts of nasty's

Here is the about screen shot.

Mine was already set to just go to the most likely site.

I have adaware, but not SpyBot.

    Hi SVTBlackLight01

After this Im staying out as I only have windows ME.

    http://modernengineuity.com/img/about.gif
    http://www.modernengineuity.com/img/about.gif
I can get there with either.

best done on a fresh boot from control panel

Id suggest internet options content tab, auto complete
button and toogle off or on any of those that you use or not.

always do the basics internet properties clear history, delete files
mark the popup to delete offline content

I wonder how you got a custom version any clues ?

Another suggestion go to windows update center..

Im not sure how to do the IE repair on XP ,someone here will say..

SpyBot is a little better in my opinion but i use both, I dont think getting it will fix the problem though ,, please get anyway
Update it first scan and let it fix anything marked in red, it will be marked for you --things marked in green are optional

    SpyBot

Here is some messages posted at MS IE newsgroups, on same subject HERE

    Good luck
    Lonny

    Hi SVTBlackLight01

Are you still having the same problem ?
Did you get, update, and run spybot ?
Is the version of adaware, 6 and build 162 ?
Have you been to windows update center yet ?

Are you confident with regedit ?

    Bye for now

    Hello,SVTBlackLight01

For Ad-Aware 6 build 0162 please make sure
that the Reffile # Being used is 136 09.04.2003
just startup Ad-Aware goto the top of the Scanner
look for the Globe click it & it should update that
Reffile # also a good idea would be to try this

    download 'Hijack This!'.

Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan ".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please show us its contents.

    Good luck

Did you get, update, and run spybot ?
Is the version of adaware, 6 and build 162 ?
Have you been to windows update center yet ?

Are you confident with regedit ?

navigate to these keys and verify
    -----------------
    ======[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]
    @= "http:// "

    ==============
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
    "ftp "= "ftp:// "
    "gopher "= "gopher:// "
    "home "= "http:// "

Ok let me get in on this frakus!

Hi AAPlus, all Lonnie is trying to do is get him to answer the questions. He answers questions with more questions without answering the prior questions.

SpyBot and Adaware updated should be run in addition to HiJackThis.

Hi Lonnie you have definately helped remind me of the obvious before, so consider this. He said "some www sites ".

The registry values you refered to are defaults, but if the www is typed on the address line it would not matter if these registry entries exsited at all.

The problem here I believe is a damaged WinSock. So Mr SVTBlackLight01 that is why you need to do the Spy/Aware scans, to get rid of the initiator of this problem first.

    Then do 2 things

    1. start-run
    type
    ipconfig /flushdns
Note: this will work if you are using DHCP, it will fail if you do not use DHCP. So we want to clear it if you do, disreguard any reply from this command if it works it works if it don't it don't!

    2. Download and execute the WinSock Fix here:

    http://www.cexx.org/LSPFix.exe

That is if you want this fixed!

If you can't get to the sight using www in the address but can if you leave it out I'd suspect a hosts file problem. Look in your windows\system32\drivers\etc folder for a file named hosts (no extension). If it's there, open it in notepad and see if the problem addresses are listed there. If so, delete them from the file. You might want to just delete the whole works and maybe save yourself some trouble down the road. If there's an entry that has an address of 127.0.0.1 and it refers to localhost you can leave that one. I just did some checking here and was able to duplicate the problem by adding websites to the file and giving them phony addresses.

You should not need to do the Reg edit. The WinSock fix should handle this.

Get SpyBot and run it before Adaware. Run these before the fixes if possible to hopefully clean the original cause.

Also Zander's soulution could also be the fix for you, and probably is. Completely different fix but would give almost same symtoms.

I have adaware version 5.83, but I will update it to 6.0

Hi BlackLight Uninstall version 5 first
Highjackthis is a tool we could use that would make a list
of startups and IE's possible problems etc etc

AAPlus all I was saying is at this point (that point) all it would have done is complicate matters.
who knows we mayhave to use it. I could stot a few problems as
reported by highjackthis but gee ,I'd rather let the others here use it, or send poster to http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

Mflynn You're right i did miss the some in some www sites
Thanks and what is " DHCP "

Zander Ive never seen a host file in that dirrectory ?
    But I am newbe..

BlackLight dont modify any HOST file unless its in the exact location zander suggets keep us informed and if it gets to that
    zander will step in .

Everyone thanks for getting involced in this

    Hello,mflynn

I will say this then say no more first i don't
think it is a Winsock problem for if it was then
why can he get to one site & not some others

    Hi,SVTBlackLight01

Now please make sure please that before
    you go & Install Ad-Aware 6 build 0162
that you Uninstall 5.83 then once you go
to Install it that you close all running programs

once Installed please startup Ad-Aware then
goto the top of the scanner & look for the Globe
click it & it will update the Reffile # to this 136 09.04.2003

Ok now if you run the Winfix & have no luck try this
    please

    http://members.shaw.ca/installations/WinFix.exe

    Good luck

    Mmmm

That is the symtom of a damaged winsock, cannot access some site etc. usually caused by improper removal od commonName and NewDotNet??????????

Now if it was completely disabled, he would go nowhere.

Well, I was getting NewDot error messages right before I had a system crash, and had to reload my operating system. As far as I know it has been removed from my system since then, but my connection problems didn't start for quite a while afther that so it didn't seem related.

How would I repair this problem?
