In recently downloaded a file which was supposed to have multiple other files inside of it. However, after it was saved, I checked and found it to be an executable (I was expecting a zip or rar file). When I checked the properties, it had the "archive" check box checked. When I try to execute it, a DOS window pops up and closes. I tried opening it with WinRAR and PowerArchiver, but received errors saying that it was either the incorrect file type or was corrupt. What do I do?

If you were expecting a zip, and got an exe. Something did happen when you opened it. I would do a full virus scan, and probably a trojan/worm scan. Did you get this from someone you know and trust??

Got it off of Kazaa. I did scan it, but Norton came up with nothing (as it usually does). I don't think it is a virus, because it was about 200 megabytes in size ( I stay away from the small files that are unrealistically small). Should I get rid of it?

Norton doesn t usually pick up trojans/worms. Have you run SpyBot? If a Dos window opened and closed, I would be very wary. The file you can delete, but right now it appears you don't know what it did.

I ran it, but it couldn't remove two cydoor .dll files from my system folder because they were still in use. Is cydoor a system-crippling application?

Anyway, do you have any suggestions on what I should do with the file? If you don't know what I should do, then I might as well delete it since it's of no use to me anyway.

    Hi, Slanofka ~

Cydoor is spyware that is part of KaZaA. The one you can't remove is 'cd_clint.dll' or you will render KaZaA inoperable. You need to download and install KaZaA Lite. It is faster, has more features, comes without spyware and other goodies.

For further details & download, please see my posts here and here.

10-4 to that Cydoor is a baddie!

Update SpyBot then reboot into safe mode where it will not be in use and SpyBot can get rid of it.

    You're mighty welcome, pilgrim!

Mike is right...you will need to thoroughly uninstall old KaZaA. Make sure you delete any old folders left behind. Install new version to a folder called 'KaZaA Lite' - it may do it by default - I can't remember.

Make sure you set Ad-aware and SpyBot to ignore the file 'cd_clint.dll' once you install the KaZaA Lite. It will appear on both as 'cydoor', but you can scroll to see the file name. Set them to ignore this file only. As my referenced post explained, it is a dummy file just to keep KaZaA working.

Also - very important - once you connect to KaZaA online, it will always ask you to upgrade to the newest version - make sure you DO NOT. Press 'No', otherwise you will be right back where you started with a bunch of spy dukey and limited bandwidth & file selection.

Also, why is my participation level 1000 when it used to be 0? I didn't upload anything. Will it remain at 1000? Also, does participation level change the files that you can download? Or does it simply place higher participation level users first when dividing bandwidth?

It means absolutely nothing. :p This is simply a hacked version of KaZaA made to work best on the users behalf.

Oh ****! I forgot to disable sharing and had about 60 files downloaded from me?! Good thing I checked this morning and disabled sharing. Do you know if there are any security holes in kazaa that I should be aware of?

    Hi, Slan ~

Don't disable sharing...that is not fair to others and puts you in the 'leech' category. ;)

Instead, go to C:\Program Files\KaZaA Lite\My Shared Folder and move some things out, but if you don't share, then the system doesn't work. Moving things will keep your bandwidth from being too sucked up too much if you have some popular items in that folder.

    Under 'Tools' > 'Options':
    • 'User' tab, make sure you check 'Notify before installing..,'
    • 'Traffic' tab is where you can limit uploads from your 'My Shared Folder'
    • 'Advanced' tab check 'Do not function as a SuperNode'
    • 'Messages' tab check 'Ignore all incoming messages'
    • 'Filter ' tab > 'Miscellaneous' section, check all three
You may want to uncheck the first one to be able to download certain file types, but make sure you scan it with an anti-virus program, which is what you should be doing with ALL downloads.

Your firewall, updated anti-virus app and your vigilance to detail will help keep you secure.
