    Here's a mean one:
Once in a whiile, not often, mind you, NS 7.02 decides to replicate a page (blank) over and over, just about one a second! That can really add up! Seems it happens, randomly, when calling up a URL from an email.

Only way out is to click Alt-F4 faster than it generates a web page or go to Task Mgr and "End task" it.

What in the world is going on? I'm about ready to go back to NS 4.79 -- at leas the email behaves.

As Antony suggested, is the URL the culprit. Do a Ctrl H (History) and find the site and see if it repeats it. If it does, post the URL. Another question, do you use "blank page" as home page? Another possible, you have been infected with some BADware. Do you use/run Spybot or Adaware. Once in a blue moon, Acrobat/.pdf files will will cycle reload (only when called by browser), but I think thats more a Acrobat/XP issue. This is a long shot.. mouse/driver/OS or settings are repeating a "mouse click" act... keeps requesting new page, but since it is mimicking a denial of service, the page opens, but does not have resouces to load/populate the page.

No, not using blank home page. Only occurs whebn callling up a URL from an email page. Can do the same in NSS 4.79 and no problem! Opera7 is ok and so is IE6 -- just NS 7.02.

Will check the History next time it occurs and see what I can see.

    Thanks for the tips,
    Bob

Just for idle curiosity, but is this a POP3 or IMAP account? Are you using "Modern" or "Classic" themes? Also, when you do get a blank page "hit" in email call to a URL, that is when you can try getting the "same" error occurance when you call the same URL from the history file. Check your settings in....
    Edit| Preferences| Advance|.. expand..(select) Scripts and Plugins.......
    "JavaScrip" should be disabled
"Mail & Newsgroups" should be enabled.
I don't feekl this would be the problem, but check'en anyway. Keep us posted.

    Dennis,

Pop 3 acct. Only thing in History that's suspicious -- and I didn't call it up before is "ad.doubleclick.net ". Showed up again today. Took the steps mentioned, but clicking on the URL on results in a single green bar in the upper left corner and nother else(?). Will keep watching for strange apparitions. BTH used SpyBot (updated) and AdWare 6 (updated). SpyBot missed one that AdWare found and removed. It was identified as a cookie of some sort.

Did a full searched for "doubleclick" but to no avail.

    Will keep you posted.

    Dennis,
OK, gottit. They were just the opposite of what you described. Resettem. Will watch it real close. If it appears to have cured it, will put it back and see if problem reoccurs. If so, You've solved the mystery!
    Many, many thanks

Ok, this thing jumped at me again! It appears to be related to the address book in NS 7.02.

If I click (right or left) on the from line of a received email (to add to the address book), it replicates blank pages just about every seond. Only cure is to alt-F4 faster than it replicates until NS 7.02 is completel closed. Must close it completely, or it continues to replicate blank pages.

So far, it appears only when trying to add to the address book.

If I call up address book, via Window in the tool bar, can manually enter a new addee w/o trouble.

    ideas?:(

    Hi GPaDavis,

    With Netscape closed:

    Go to this Folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt
NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

Scroll down to localstore.rdf and delete the file.

Hopefully this will correct the problem. The file contains the windows settings, plus a great deal more. Could be that the file is corrupt.

    Hi GPaDavis

It appears you definitely hit on the problem. I have "Personel address Book" which is located in "abook.mab" and "Collected address Book" which is located in "History.mab ". I am not using any additional address books, so I'm not sure if they are contained in "abook.mab" or they have there own xxx.mab location. My suspicion one of them is set at "read only" or has become corrupted. I've never had this type of problem and have no direct experience. I will ask Ramona to guide you though this.
You can find these file in your "xxxxxx.slt" file. Click on "file type" and look for .mab type files. You can do a "file properties / attribute" to see if they are set to "read only. If they are "untick ". Not to confuse, just trying to teach myself.. but did a change in my address book, noticed a update time / date in my "locale store.rdf" file. I'm sure Ramona will explain the relationship. Sorry I could not be more assistance, but this is an area I have no experience.

    Ramona to the rescue,

I guess I had my reply screen open to long. Thanks for stepping in. Was curious about that "localstore.rdf" file it showed the update to my file change. So is this a "summary" type file like we see in .msf file types?

    Hi Dennis,

The localstore.rdf file is kinda sorta like a summary file in Mail. Here's a good reference:

    RDF-in-Mozilla, FAQ

RDF serves two primary purposes in Mozilla. First, it is a simple, cross-platform database for small data stores. Second, and more importantly, the RDF model is used along with XUL templates as an abstract "API" for displaying information. RDF in 50 words or less is a quick, high-level description of what RDF does in Mozilla. The Back-end Architecture document describes in more detail how Mozilla's RDF implementation works, and gives a quick overview of the interfaces that are involved.
    -----

I don't know if you opened the file, but it appears that "localstore.rdf" has added applications settings, added themes, theme settings, window positions of Navigator, Mail, URLbar history, and bookmark settings. It seems to be a general dumping ground of settings, both default and user.

So if one deletes this file, one could loose some Netscape "user" settings? Which leads to two more questions...
    (1) Are these (user settings) per "Preferences" or "Mail and Newsgroup "?
    (2) Should this file be included in backups?

    Hi Dennis,

Yes, you could lose some user settings by deleting the file, depending on whether or not you changed window settings, etc.

It wouldn't be a specific file to back up, because of its propensity to corruption.
    * My personal choice is to start with a new localstore.rdf file, i.e., if my Profile was lost, corrupt, etc., and I had to start from scratch. The file is located in the salted folder, so it is included in the daily backup, or however often you do a backup.

Only if you are certain that the file is clean, would you transfer it to a clean Profile. I have never copied it over from one Profile to a new Profile.

The user settings I was thinking about would be if you had added a Theme, or changed the window size in any of the components.

    Hi Bob,

Here's what you need to do:

    With Netscape closed:

    Go to this Folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt
NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

Scroll down to localstore.rdf and delete the file.

If this isn't perfectly clear, post back.

    Ramona, Dennis L:

After posting my last one, realized I could easily test the fix and report back. Dumm, dumm and dummer.

Good news is I did test the From lines and others and the blank page replication did NOT appear!

It worked! Thanks so much, Ramona. Don't know what we'd do without you around to bail us out.
