I have a Micron 200 MHz puter that I use to experiment on. I am installing a removable HD in it so I can load different os's on some hard drives I have and learn them. The removable HD case is mounted on top of the CD rom, so I want to set the Hard drive to be Master on the primary IDE, and the CD rom as slave to that( so the ribbon will fit). On the second controller, I have a 6.4 gi HD as master and a 2.4 gig as slave.

I cannot get the setup to see the cd rom. I know it is working and just in case I tried another.

Also, am I right in saying that the hard drive containing the OS has to be the master on the Primary IDE?

From my experience, CD roms can be fussy about their configuration, also having it on the primary IDE may slow the data transfer speed of the HD.
I would try setting the drives in another configuration (without bolting them in), say: drive with OS and 6.4 gig on primary IDE; CD rom and 2.4 gig on secondary.
If this works then get some extended cables to fit. (Extended cables won't go astray by the sound of your experiments :) )

By the way, the CD rom is working in spite off the fact that it is not showing up in the bios setup.

    My current config is this:
on Primary IDE ; I have a 6.4 (WIN 98 loaded) as master and a 2.1 as slave. Secondary IDE has the removeable HD (Currently a 1.2 with win 98 loaded) as Master and CD rom as slave.

So the machine wants to boot to primary(6.4). I put in a win 98 setup disk and fdisk gave me the option to choose which disk to view, but when I tried to make the 1.2 active it said I can only make the first disk active. What am I doing wrong. I am just learning the ins and outs of multiple drives.
