The OS goes into what Microsoft calls "reduced functionality mode" ..........read this as it won't work.

Activate the product by telepone or Internet.

Now, I suppose you could uninstall everything on day 29, wipe the hard drive and reinstall to get another 30 days and do this over and over ...........Seems like a huge waste of time to me. :D

If I understand correctly, you already installed that copy of XP on your machine and activated it?

If so, the activation for your friend's machine will fail. One license=one installation=one activation.

If not activated, logon will fail. But you can still use the machine with all the functionality that comes with Safe Mode :D .

    uninstall xp pro

how do i remove xp pro... i have done a search, and most common answer is through add remove programs, although i have done a clean install on h/drive, the above suggests i should be able to remove xp pro from add/remove...
i have xp1 sp but no windows xp pro???

WHAT HAVE I DONE NOW

Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I seriously doubt you can get an operating system to uninstall itself.

You did'nt say if theXP you want to uninstall Is on your machine or the copy you put on your friends machine. If your friends machine, I don't know how to help you.

If we're dealing with your machine, the legitimate installation, and you want to be up and running with XP, you need to boot from the CD and do a clean or repair install. A clean install will cost you all your personal settings and data. You will also have to download and install all of the service packs and updates and then your programs. You will be able to activate it again with MS. If you have data and settings you want to save, you can try a repair installation of XP. Maybe it will work.

There is a lot of information on this site and at Microsoft about doing a repair installation. Search both and read it all. Then try a repair install.

Do another post if you want to try a repair and I'll try to help.

    Which machine for the uninstall?

If you are saying you want to uninstall WinXP from your friend's computer and you said you did a clean install on Drive H, I'm guessing his old OS is still on the computer. Then all you would have to do is format his Drive H. Then edit the boot file of his old OS to remove the WinXP information. HTH

    xp un-install

    all sorted...
i was told (to my surprise, thinking xp is nt based & no DOS)
to use a win98 boot disk to fdisk and format.

i did so and re-installed win 98 for him...
    between 6 p.m. till 10.30 p.m. one day and
    10 a.m. till 7 p.m.

    the prob's were...
    un-install xp.
unrecognised modem driver supplied (and attempting every conceivable way to install ) i finally went to my pc 2 miles away and d/loaded right one.
for some reason installation of sondblaster live driver hung at end and had to do twice.
really annoying (rubbish) kodak driver & software he wanted on to do photo editing ( i could'nt explain he could have p/shop pro and do better, because he's a complete novice and beleived kodak camera = kodak software... give him time
and most of the time was spent trying to contact his Isp Freeserve for his details.
to save me a lot of time and hassle i would like to know what i need in the form of a laptop, etc, i'm thinking of laplink, and can i connect laptop via usb... and is it just a case of partitioning h/drive to take win98, me (YUK) xp pro & home or will xp pro fix all home prob's as even though i'm a novice in comparison to you guy's i do get called on quite often.

thanks for all help and best wishes to one and all :D
