    Hello all!

I installed WinXPhomeSP1 on a Compaq Presario 2516 LapTop. It was done using the single "original" CD and not all seven backup CDs. I also downloaded and installed all updates.

Everything seems to work fine so far but in the shut down window, the hibernation option is greyed out and there´s no option under power management to enable it.

No questions were asked during the installation so, where did I take the wrong step?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

    Hi Christer
Try going to Start......Control Panel.....Power Options, set monitor to turn off after "X" amount of time, set hard disk to the same time.
Below these two options are the settings for standby and hibernate.

    Daizy

Alternately perhaps have a gander through here?

    Hi Daizy!

I don´t have the LapTop to hand right now but I´m pretty sure that I´ve been there and that the two upper options that You mention were available but neither for standby nor for hibernate.
I tried all preset power management options with the same result.

To make sure, I´ll have another look and I´ll get back if I don´t solve this.

    Thanks for the link!

    Hi again!

I´m using my friends LapTop now and I remembered correctly. There are no options for neither hibernate nor stand by. The tab, under which these functions can be activated is missing too.

The "Help" says that if the mentioned tab is missing, then the hardware isn´t capable of performing the functions.

When it was delivered with the OS preinstalled it was there so, I must have done something wrong.

The question ...... ...... is what?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

    Hi, Christer ~

If there is no 'Hibernate' tab or it is greyed out, then the BIOS is set to control this (and perhaps other power management features) rather than by Windows - or - the Compaq OEM OS version has been customized as they are allowed to do per OEM licensing and may be disabled.

You didn't do anything wrong - you have no control over the installation of power management features. You may be able to adjust these setting in the 'Power' menu of the BIOS and/or deliver control to Windows.

    Hi Bruce!

Nothing much to do in that BIOS. There were no power management settings at all.

    Thanks for the tip,
    Christer

Try searching for new hardware to see if any PM featues are picked up.

You might take a look at Compaq's drivers, too, in case they differ from the ones on the XP CD. Since we discussed this earlier, you may have already done this, but occasionally a hung driver will prevent PM from functioning. Is this the one?

    Hi, Christer ~

What version of BIOS do you have?

I have never heard of a BIOS w/o power management settings.

You should have 'Main', 'Advanced', 'Security', 'Power', 'Boot', 'Info' & 'Exit' menu items in the BIOS, normally across the top in the first window.

I´ve had another look in the BIOS and this is what I found:

    PhoenixBIOS version KF.F.05

    Parameters:

Main with date, time, language and video memory settings

System Devices with external pointing device, legacy USB support and wake on LAN from power off

Security with passwords and internal HDD lock

    Boot with boot order

    Exit with the common options

    That´s it!

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

    Hi, Christer ~

The version of PhoenixBIOS you have has the BIOS power management disabled, compliments of Compaq. Don't fret. ;)

To install the 'Hibernation' tab in 'Power Options' on the Presario notebook you will need to do this:
    • Right-click 'My Computer' > 'Properties' > 'Hardware' tab
    • Click 'Device Manager' button
    • Scroll down to & double-click 'System Devices'
    • Right-click 'ACPI Power Button' > 'Uninstall'
    • 'Yes' > close 'Device Manager' > reboot
    OK...half way there :)
    • Right-click 'My Computer' > 'Properties' > 'Hardware' tab
    • Click 'Add Hardware Wizard' button
    • 'Next' > let it search > Select 'Yes, I have already connected the hardware' > 'Next'
    • Under 'Installed hardware:', scroll down to bottom & select 'Add a new hardware device' > 'Next'
    • Select 'Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)' > 'Next'
    • Under 'Common hardware types:', scroll down to & double-click 'System Devices'
    • Under 'Manufacturer', select 'Microsoft Corporation'
    • Under 'Model', select 'ACPI Power Button'
    • 'Next' > 'Next' > 'Finish' > reboot
Now if you go to 'Control Panel' > 'Performance and Maintenance' > 'Power Options', you will have a 'Hibernate' tab.

BTW ~ here is a free download for the Presario 2516 Reference Guide.

    Hi Bruce,
    thanks for the directions!

I was running the show until the first reboot, when Windows detected the uninstalled device, installed it and prompted me to reboot.

I was taken back to square one!

    Regards,
    Christer

Detected the uninstalled device?? Never heard of such a thing.

I uninstalled and reinstalled mine on two different notebooks about 7-10 times each before posting.

Keep trying and make sure you don't miss anything in directions. These are the same directions you would get from Compaq for this very issue.

    Good luck :)

I don´t remember the exact words but XP found something new and installed it. I´ll try again next weekend if I can arrange to meet with my friend.

    Thanks for now,
    Christer

    Hi, Christer ~

If it is finding a new device and automatically installing, then try w/o the first reboot.

HP / Compaq have merged and here is my solution to the same problem I had on my HP notebook,

When you install from the cd, it uses windows own driver for the video card which doesnt include support for hibernation.

My vid card is a S3graphics twister4, all I did was go to their site and download the latest drivers...... seriously thats all

And that was that,, after a reboot everything was there.

    Bruce,

I´ll try that, if it doesn´t work according to TBP's directions.

    TBP,

I downloaded and burned to CD all available drivers for this LapTop before doing the job.
I know that video drivers were included but it seemed as if WinXP had got it right on its own, apart from the hibernation.
I didn´t connect the missing hibernation with the video driver.

I´m at my own home now and will probably get back to my friend during the next weekend. I´ll try to install the Compaq Drivers then.

I´ll let You know how it ends!

    Thanks to You both,
    Christer

    Hi, Christer ~

One thing I failed to mention.

When you rebooted and it said new hardware was found, do not let it install automatically. It is set to that by default. Instead, put it on manual, select the option to install from your own location on the next window, then follow my directions from there. I have just uninstalled my 'Hibernate' tab again and upon reboot, go the 'found new hardware' notice and proceeded as outlined flawlessly.

The 'Hibernate' tab is not connected to the video card. It is dependent on the ACPI Power Button which is a system device run by Microsoft.

    Hi Bruce!

How/where do I put it to manual in WinXP?

No questions were asked and I didn´t even notice that something was happening until I was promted to reboot!

    Hi, Christ ~

When you rebooted the first time per the directions I outlined above, you said there was a notice that new hardware was detected. In that window is the option to allow either automatic installation or manual.

My bad english can be confusing, even to me!

What the notice said was words to this meaning:

"Windows has detected new hardware AND has installed the drivers. You need to reboot Your computer ...... "

    Sorry,
    Christer
