    Hello all!

Exploring a Multisession CD, only the kB/MB of the last session is accounted for and free space is always 0.

Is this down to Windows or the recording software (Easy CD Creator 4.05)?

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

    Hi, Christer ~

    Your recording software.

I would recommend Nero, which you can try for free.

    Hi Bruce,
    thanks for Your reply!

I´ve been considering buying Nero when I migrate to WinXP but do You (or someone else) know if the later versions of Easy CD Creator have the sam "bug "?

I never could get a good installation of easy Cd creator platinum on my box. I tried Click 'n Burn which was nearly alright. Nero is the one to have, hands down. It seems to really understand the world of burning CDs.

    Hi Bill,
    thanks for Your input!

I´ve been recommended Nero before and I´ll probably buy it.
Does Nero get the used space and free space on Multisession CDs right?

Yep...Has a bar across the bottom of the screen that marks the used space and the free space.

Easy CD Creator has that bar too but when exploring a CD in Windows Explorer, it only states the size of the last session and the free space is always given as 0.

If you look at an empty CD, the free space will be 0, too. Standard ISO CD's are not formatted---the empty space on them is not delineated in any way. It it basically unused, unexplored territory. So Explorer really has no way of determining how much "free" space there is because it is empty space and therefore unmeasurable.

    Does this make any sense?

Floppies, for example, are formatted and contain the number of empty sectors that are not filled with files. Trying to measure the empty space on a CD which has never been written on is like trying to measure the width of space in which nothing (including measuring implements) exists. (Getting metaphysical, now!).

    Quasi-parallel to Schroedinger's cat, huh?

So if I wanted to, for example, determine how much dirt was in a hole that I dug 3 feet wide by 3 feet long by 3 feet deep, the answer would be none?? ;)

More like trying to get a sense of the width of the ocean when you can't see over the horizon.

(Schrödinger's cat must have been very quiet.)

...... Deutsches Gramatik Verbesser = Pils!

Okey, I understand that the reason for explorer not seeing free space is the lack of a "FAT ".
I assume that this also is the reason for the size of the last session being the only one accounted for in used space.
I also assume that explorer has to, if not read then scan the whole CD to be able to display the contents.

I wonder though, how the recording software recognizes the difference between a 650 MB CD and a 700 MB CD? My old 4.05 doesn´t but newer versions are said to recognize it.

    Thanks for explaining,
    Christer

I don't know. It must read something explorer doesn't, like "writable space ".

I used to have a little program that read the manufacturer's name from a blank CD, but I don't remember if the size information was included.

I´m at the moment using my friends LapTop with WinXP.

Explorer displays a unused CD with the correct space, used=0, free=703, total=703.

    It displays a used CD correctly too e.g., used=419, free=284, total=703.

    Improvement ......:) ...... Improvement!

What is different about that machine that makes it display the space?

    I really don´t know.

The OS is Windows XP Home SP1 with all updates.
Easy CD Creator 5 Basic (bundled with the OS) is installed.
    Nero 5.5 is installed.

    Regards,
    Christer

By the way, can these two burners interfere and cause trouble?

Should it be the one or the other but not both?

    Hi, Christer ~

Yes, these two burners can interfere and cause trouble.

EZCD Creator Basic is merely a ruse to entice you to upgrade to the Platinum. Version 5 has published issues w/ XP and the CD drivers native to XP (which is ironic because they are a watered-down licensed version from Roxio).

Nero is far superior in quality, features and range of abilities. Nero product support is par none. You may have to take an extra moment to learn your way around the interface, but well worth it.

Well, as I said earlier, it´s better to mess up someone elses computer ...... ...... but I think that EZ will end up in the bin since, as You pointed out, it´s just a "teaser" version.
