I know that German symbols can be accessed for use in e-mails simply by using the ALT key + certain numbers (ALT + 132, ALT + 225, etc.), although I haven't found an index with the list - I have the list with the seven letters. I have been unable to find the secret of how to get letters to write in Spanish. Are they available somewhere?

What you need is the Character Map. I think it can usually be found on the Start menu under Accessories>System Tools...I always move that shortcut out to the start menu proper for easier access, so I'm not sure where its default location is.

If you can't find it on the start menu, do a search on the harddrive for "charmap.exe" and put a shortcut to that anywhere that's convenient for you.

Once you've got the character map open, select the font you're working with, find the character you want in the chart and click on it. The key combination for it will be displayed in the lower righthand corner of that window.

If you want to copy it, just double click on it (or them, you can copy more than one at a time) and click on the Copy button.

    Character map

Thanks for your help in locating the Character map. However, I'm still at a loss as to how I can place the characters I need for writing e-mails in Outlook Express in Spanish (or German) handy. Short of sticking a post-it with the ALT+#'s on my monitor or keeping a crib-sheet on my desk, how can I arrange to have the "map locations" handy?

An excellant Extended ASCII Chart is available at:

    http://www.cdrummond.qc.ca/cegep/informat/Professeurs/Alain/files/ascii.htm

While not quite as handy as having an embedded character map within your e-mail program, you can prepare your message in either Word or Word Perfect, then SEND TO your e-mail recipient.

In WP, use QUICK CORRECT to change cc to ç, or nn to ñ, ?? to ¿, etc. A similar method is available in Word in AUTO CORRECT.

    Thank you

OK, I guess I can't avoid using WP or WORD for my foreign language messages, and then simply Cut and Paste them into Outlook Express. You're right: it is better than nothing, since it appears there is no way to get these characters imbedded in OE directly.

    Thanks again.

You seem willing to type the Alt+XXXX commands, so an easy way to access Character Map (to me anyway) is to create a shortcut to Character Map (charmap.exe) as Miz has suggested, and then put the shortcut into Quick Launch. Or you can create a Keyboard shortcut to the shortcut by right clicking on the Character Map shortcut, clicking Properties|then Shortcut tab and entering a letter into the Shortcut key line. Windows will automatically add "Ctrl+Alt+" in front of the letter. So the keyboard shortcut becomes Control+Alt+whatever letter.
This way I enter foreign characters--at least those in Character Map--in any document (like email) without using Word or WP. And of course I can do it here, too. € ü ñ etc.

Don't cut and paste. FILE | SEND TO | MAIL (or MAIL RECIPIENT) will do the whole job for you, faster and surer.
